BCH Ice Stars Novice C has unforgettable season
Jen Fisher
September of 2015 was
the beginning of the end of
girls hockey in Huron
County as we know it.
Under the leadership of
Scott Meyer, Robyn Dietz,
Chris Stevenson and Kevin
Carnochan, 13 girls from
the Wave, BCH, and Blyth
Brussels came together to
form the BCH Ice Stars Nov-
ice
ovice C hockey team. They
began the year with a cou-
ple of exhibition games
against South Huron, losing
both. The first half of the
regular season was tough as
they finished in fifth with 4
wins, 4 losses and 1 tie.
Their spirits would not be
dampened and in Novem-
ber the regular season
began and the girls quickly
came together and took the
division by storm. They
were able to finish the regu-
lar season in the second
spot with 10 wins, 2 losses
and 2 ties. As playoffs began
the girls were excited to
learn that they would also
be playing to qualify for pro-
vincials. It was a tough few
weeks but the Novice C
team proved tough to beat,
sweeping their final playoff
round against South Huron,
becoming the Novice C,
division 1, WOGHL cham-
pions! They were entering
provincials on a high!
At 8:15 a.m. on Friday,
April 8, the girls skated onto
the ice at South Fletcher
Arena in Brampton and
began a series of games that
they will never forget. The
game was against Toronto
Leaside and our hometown
girls proved that hockey is
alive and well in Huron
County as they took that
game with a score of 3-0. At
3:45 p.m., the same day, the
girls once again proved that
they were a force to be reck-
oned
ectioned with as they beat Sault
Ste. Marie 9-0.
Saturday brought our
fiercest competition against
the Chatham Outlaws. It was
an intense game with both
teams determined to win.
However, the game would
end in a 0-0 tie and our girls
were on a high as they
entered the quarterfinals that
evening against the Waterloo
Ravens. Once again, the BCH
novice Ice Stars would not be
beat and were able to enter
semifinals with a 3-0 win.
Semi finals were played on
Sunday morning with two
tough matches, BCH vs
Lucan and South Huron vs
St. Thomas. With some hard
work and determination
Lucan was beat by BCH with
a score of 4-0 and South
Huron defeated St. Thomas
in overtime by a score of 1-0.
The girls were excited to
meet up with their rivals at
12:30 p.m. Sunday after-
noon and play for gold. The
atmosphere was electric
with excitement and our lit-
tle hometown hero's did it
once again with a 2-0 win!
The girls wore their medals
with pride as they were the
only team in the Novice C
division that didn't lose a
game and the only team in
the entire tournament to not
have a goal scored against
them. As the season came to
a close for these hardworking
gals, they are excited to start a
new era in girls hockey for
Huron County with the start
of the Huron Heat. For those
interested, check out the
Huron Heat webpage at
huronheat.com for tryout
times that are to begin this
month.
