When people are experienc-
ing grief, they can become
incredibly good actors to hide it
to gain the approval of others.
People prefer to be with positive
people, therefore to not be posi-
tive would be a reason to be
shunned. This strategy con-
sumes a lot of energy to keep
the grief hidden which drains
the person of the energy
needed to perform at school or
at a job and stops them from
having a vibrant life. To combat
the bad feelings and lack of
energy people turn to things
that will offer comfort, escape
or a mental break from the
pain. If the grief is not dealt
with, the need for these escapes
grows and can become danger-
ous, particularly when addic-
tions come into play such as to
food, drugs, alcohol, anger and
bullying, exercise and other
means of trying to relieve the
pain.
The final statement that
Simpson showed to the stu-
dents was, "What would you
rather..." She emphasized that
people have choices. They do
not have to just follow the old
myths and false statements.
They can know that it is nor-
mal, natural and healthy to
grieve. They have the choice
to ask for more ways to talk
about grief and bad feelings.
They can seek out more ways
to educate themselves and
others. Simpson acknowl-
edged that the students in
attendance had already taken
positive steps in participating
in the Emotional Health Fair
and encouraged them to con-
tinue to advocate for them-
selves and others to make
improvements in the future.
