Some Dairy Farmers Raise Replacements 1'Whether to buy or raise the replacements for his milking herd can be a difficult decision for a, dairyman. Although it is expensive, most dairymen should raise their own, says Dr. R. David Clark of Canada Department of Agriculture's research station at Lethbridge, Alberta. Doing so reduces the danger of disease and makes it possible to follow a definite breeding program, he explains. Contributing to the cost of raising the calves is the need to produce a large number of fe- male calves to meet the 15 to 25 per cent annual turnover in the milking herd and to com- pensate for losses of about 20 per cent of female calves between birth and calving. Despite this, Dr. Clark be- lieves the majority of dairymen raise, rather than purchase, their herd replacements. Based on the results of ex- periments at Lethbridge, Dr. Clark lists some rules for rais- ing healthy dairy calves: — Provide clean, well venti- lated but draft -free accom- modation for young calves. —Allow calves to suckle dams for the first three days or provide colostrum. —Feed 6 to 8 lbs. of whole milk per day, depending on size and breed. —Feed a calf -starter to a maximum of 4 lbs. daily and good quality hay from one week old until 12 to 16 weeks of age. The starter should con- tain the following proportions: cereal grains, 45 lbs.; bran, 15 lbs.; oilmeal, 32 lbs.; molasses, 5 lbs.; minerals, 3 lbs. — Wean calves from milk when they are eating 1 to 1.5 pounds of starter daily. This usually takes four weeks for Holsteins, six to eight weeks for Jerseys. — When calves are four to eight weeks old, feed them four pounds of grower ration daily and good quality hay or pasture. Less concentrate need be used if the pasture is good quality. The ration should con- tain the following proportions: cereal grains, 67 lbs.; bran, 10 lbs.; oilmeal, 20 lbs.; minerals, 3 lbs. —Good quality pasture or roughage is usually sufficient for normal growth from eight months until calving. —Provide water and miner- als at all times. Dehorn calves and see that they are vaccinated at appropri- ate times. — Breed heifers at 15 to 17 months of age when the approx- imate weight should be: Jersey 550 lbs., Guernsey 600 lbs., Ayrshire 675 lbs., and Holstein 800 lbs. Chatting with a merchant the other day, we mentioned our "ABC figure." "What," he asked, "is an ABC figure?" Perhaps what we told him will also interest you. This newspaper is a member of the Audit Bureau of Circulations, an independent, nonprofit organization of nearly 4,000 advertisers, advertising agencies, and publishers. Its purpose is to provide accurate and factual reports on the circulations of member publishers. In the ad- vertising and publishing industry, the ABC insigne is often referred to as the "hallmark of circulation values." At regular intervals, an ABC traveling auditor visits our office to check our records. The findings of this physical audit are embodied in an Audit Report pub- lished by ABC — the report literally tells us what our circulation is. Virtually everything an advertiser should know about our circulation is found in this report, facts and figures without opinions. Few retailers bother to ask to see a copy of our report, yet we want you to know one is available any- time you are interested in the quality and quantity of our circulation audience — the audience for your advertising messages. What is an ABC figure? It is our way of assuring you that you get full measure for your advertising dollar in this newspaper. • 4 • • • 1M 4 • 1 • • 4 a 1, w • 4
