UNIT II, NORTHSIDE 'UCW
Mrs. J. M. Scott was hostess
to Unit Two of Northside Unit-
ed Church Women on Tuesday
evening. Miss Gladys Thomp-
son, president, opened the meet-
ing after welcoming the mem-
bers present, by reading a
poem entitled, "Life -Is For Liv-
ing," by Patience Strong. Af-
ter singing the hymn, "Where
Cross the Crowded Ways of
Life," the roll was called by
the secretary, Mrs. J. Ure Stew-
art, and 18 members and two
visitors responded by giving an
amusing school incident of their
earlier days.
Miss Thompson expressed her
appreciation to all for their
help and co-operation in pre-
senting so successfully the Bri-
dal Pageant in the church. Mrs.
Ross Savauge, devotional con-
vener, read the Scripture les-
son, Matthew 12:46-50, follow-
ing the same with a brief medi-
tation on it, and concluding it
with prayer.
The topic was taken by the
program convener, Mrs. Jack
Kellar, namely, "Problems and
Questions in Canada and the
United States." The question
was raised as to why we can-
not all live and work together
in spite of differences of creed,
nationality and social standing.
"God," said the speaker, "work-
ing through people and nations
can and will solve the problems
in His own way and in His own
time." She followed this with
an account of a travelogue that
she and her husband made this
year through the Southern
States to Florida, illustrating it
with slides.
Mrs. Stewart showed slides
of the Bridal Pageant present-
ed by the Unit in June. Men
and women of Huron Presby-
tery again are holding a ses-
sion at the United Church sum-
mer school, • north of Goderich,
on • Saturday, Dec. 7, when the
book, "The Word and the Way,"
will be discussed.
The closing hymn was "There
is No East Nor West." 'The so-
cial committee, Mrs. P. B. Mof-
fat and Miss Gladys Thompson,
provided lunch. Mrs. H. Hugill
expressed thanks to the hos-
tess, speaker, and all who took
part in the program.
SLOW -SPEED ROCKET
Accustomed as we are to
rockets which travel at speeds
of seven thousand feet and
more per second, we wouldn't
be impressed much by one
whose top acceleration was a
mere 132 miles an hour. How-
ever, this was the case in 1829.
In that year, George and Ro-
bert Stephenson. of England
built a four -ton steam locomo-
tive which developed about 20
horsepower at a speed of 131/2
m.p.h. It was named "T
Rocket."
