Alter Method
Of Reporting Egg
Prices In Toronto
Commencing Monday, August
19, the daily Toronto egg price
report by the Poultry Division,
Canada Department of Agricul-
ture, will quote only the weight-
ed average wholesale to retail
cartoned price.
The "spot price", which has
been reported for several years,
will be discontinued,
During recent years, the vol-
ume of eggs traded on the spot
market in Toronto has dropped
to a very low percentage of the
total quantity of eggs moving in
the area.
A Department official point-
ed out that at present whole-
salers and retailers are con-
tracting their supplies based on
the spot market, but the pro-
duct is not actually traded on
that market. As a result, the
entire market structure is being
controlled by a very small vol-
ume of eggs and hence has be-
come very vulnerable to violent
fluctuation.
Producer prices in Ontario
which were previously based on
the spot price may now 'be re-
lated to the new quotations.
At a recent meeting of the
Ontario Poultry Council, pro-
ducers, grading station opera-
tors, Wholesalers and various in-
dustry and departmental offi-
cers gathered to discuss the
new reporting method. The
meeting requested that the
daily price reporting for the
Toronto market be based on
the weighted average wholesale
to retail cartoned price.
The new cartoned price has
been reported for the past sev-
eral weeks along with the spot
price.
Huron Farm News
Backward weather has slow-
ed harvest of spring grain.
White beans are growing very
well at the present. Sweet corn
harvest is expected to com-
mence next week. Because of
plenty of moisture, late planted
turnips have recovered.
