PROVENCE DIFFERS FROM
THE REST OF FRANCE
The ancient province of
southeastern Franc e, still
known as Provence, differs
greatly within itself and also
from the other parts of the
country. The north is damp,
changeable and stony; the
south is mild, given to the keep-
ing -of bees and silkworms and
to growing olives, citrons, mul-
berries, wine grapes a n d
oranges. The Provencal people
have a language and literature
of their own and it is almost as
close to Spanish and Italian as
to French.

MOST NICKNAMED PROVINCE
Canada's smallest province,
Prince Edward Island, may be
its richest in nicknames. It is
known by such familiar titles as
"The Garden of the Gulf," "The
Million -Acre Farm," "The Gar-
den of Canada," "The Island,"
and with more reverence to its
agriculture than its native ele-
gance, "Spud Island." The peo-
ple of the little province—its
area is a tenth of one per cent
of all Canada—tend to call it
simply "The Island."
