The Huron Expositor, 1963-06-27, Page 5Bonus • ffer Stresses Advantages ofI'vdr Suggest Care For Refrigerator ,. Although modern electric re- frigerators need less attention than many major appliances, Hydro's Homemakers' Service offers these suggestions for avoiding needless trouble calls to the repairman. If the refrigerator isn't work- ing properly, make a few rou- tine checks before calling the repairman: Check to see that. the plug is firmly inserted in the wall out- let. Check your fuse box to see whether a fuse has blown. Check the cold control. It may have inadvertently been moved from the usual position. The refrigerator instruction book should be kept available for quick reference. If the in- terior light has burned out, for example, the instruction book will tell you how to remove the protective cover and replace the bulb. Here are a few other •hints to make sure you get the most from your refrigerator: Don't leave the door open un- necessarily. Warm air entering the refrigerator speeds frost build-up. Don't use ice picks, knives, screw drivers or other sharp instruments ments to remove frost. They can damage cool- ing coils. A plastic scraper— often supplied with a new re- frigerator—is best. Don't wash ice cube trays in hot water—most have a special finish that makes cubes easier to remove. For cleaning the refrigerator, lukewarm, sudsy water is best for the exterior. Inside, use warm water with baking soda. When you are away on vaca- tion it is quite safe to leave the refrigerator running, even for several weeks at a time. Frost will not build up because the door is not being opened. Before closing the cottage for the winter, however, discon- nect and clean out the refrig- erator. Be sure to leave the door open so that the refrigera- tor dries out thoroughly and will be sweet-smelling the' fol- lowing spring. Way To Choose Refrigeration For maximum convenience and economy, your new home freezer should be matched to the needs of your family. Hydro's Homemakers' Service provides the following sugges- tions as a guide to prospective freezer -buyers. Modern freezers may be part of a refrigerator -freezer com- bination or a separate unit, and can provide from three to 32 This Is Your Last Chance A Complete Travelling Beauty Salon , Dries Nail Polish • Perfumes Bair Contains Large Unbreakable Make-up Mirror Smart, Lightweight Oyster -white Travel Case to obtain this Glamorous Medallion Hair Dryer (a 29.95 value) Absolutely FREE! About 35 pounds of food can be stored in one cubic foot -of freezer ca- pacity. The size of freezer to best serve the needs of yoftr family depends on how often you shop, how much entertain- ing you do, and the amount of time the homemaker can de - Vote to food preparation. At least two cubic feet of freezer capacity should be pro- vided for each member of the family which shops once a week. For the family which shops less frequently, three to six cubic feet for each member is better. Families of six or more are advised to buy a sep- arate freezer unit. Be sure that the frozen food compartment in a combination refrigerator -freezer is capable of zero or below -zero tempera- tures. In some models, the froz- ert food compartment maintains temperatures at 15 to 30 de- grees F., suitable only for freez- ing ice cubes and storing froz- en foods for one or two'weeks. A true freezer section has sep- arate insulation and its own cooling coils. Upright freezer models offer more .accessible' food storage and are usually better suited to use in a' kitchen. Although this type frosts more quickly than a chest freezer, it is also easier to defrost. Chest freezers open from the top and food is stored in re- movable baskets, a convenient arrangement • for irregularly shaped packages. Same freezer models are frost -free, a feature which elim- inates the problems of empty- ing the freezers compartment more than twice a year for cleaning.
