This Week At the Seaforth District High School
(By GISELA DORRANCE)
Now, 1` should be very gay
and witty, and beguile your
cares—but I fear that there will
be the odd dark cloud among
the sunbeams. I have tried to
convince myself, that the pro-
per thing is to be calm, cool,
and confident, to sleep thirteen
hours a night and take long
walks, and to banish weak fear,
but "mon coeur refusa", as
Anatole France said. (See, I've
been studying!) I swear that I
would be disappointed if I
couldn't get myself worked up
about every set of exams. 'It's
a kind of tradition: No Student'
Shall Take Examinations Na-
turally.
The examinations referred to
above are a Grade 13 "dry run",
lasting from May 15 to May 22.
The purpose of this, as far as
I can figure it out, are: (1) to
provide additional practice in
writing exams at the Upper
School level, and (2) to point
out any gaping holes in our
education, so that we can hurry
to plug them with rags and
chewing gum. Some of my fel-
low -sufferers are worrying that
May 21 could be nerve-wracki
ing; hence I make this plea:
Play softly, 0 band, make it low,
slow and lazy—
For brisk marching tunes might
drive upper school crazy.
Treadsoftly, cadets, while
you're being inspected—
Or you may find yourself being
dissected.
Other signs of the dying
school year: public speaking,
awards day, honor banquet.. This
year's public speaking cham-
pions are Bonnie Uhler (Jr.)
and Bob.. Reynolds (Sr.). This
year the guest speaker at the
honor banquet will be Dr. R.
G. Stanton, chairman of the
mathematics department of the
University of Waterloo. An-
other thing which I should have
put in the list above, is the
year -book, which is presently at
press. Now, I must end this
completely disorganized para-
graph of odds and ends before
the English department clobbers
me. (Unity, coherence and em-
phasis, you know!)
On Saturday a group of stu-
A SMILE OR TWO
A man in England decided to
visit a married couple he hadn't
seen for some time. The wife
opened the door. "Hello, Mag-
gie, nice to see you," he said.
"How's Jim?"
"Jim?" she repeated. "Didn't
you know? 'E's dead. Went
down to the garden to pull a
cabbage for dinner and as 'e
,bent down 'e fell dead right
there on the spot."
"How awful!" exclaimed the
visitor. "What on earth did you
do?"
"Well, what could we do? We
had to open a tin of peas!"
dents will be going to Wing -
ham to the CKNX Dance Party
(6 o'clock). Anyone who would
like to see SDHS tearing up the
floor had better get the old set
turned up.
If any of you indulgent read-
ers feel that this epistle is
sadly biased in one direction,
it may be because my nose for
news is stuffed up with a cold.
