The thorniest preblenn feeing
the executive Members of farm
organizations, or RAY other or-
ganization in these times, is
the lack of interest of its mem-
bers. One cannot single out any
one thing that is responsible
for keeping members home
from farm meetings. This leth-
argy Is a combination of many
factors affecting the living hab-
its of most rural residents. It
is not my intention to pinpoint
the various reasons which influ-
ence people to stay away frown
the meetings of their organiza-
tion, but only to show the re-
sults. This we know—there is.
an ever increasing demand for
the time and interest of com-
munity minded people in this
fast moving age. At the same
time, there appears to be a re-
luctance - on the part of much
of the populace to accept any
responsibility in the commun-
ity in which they live.
There has been considerable
evidence of this laissez-faire at-
titude when two farm meetings
were called in the county re-
cently. At the Perth Wheat
Producers annual meeting held
in Mitchell on the 26th of Feb-
ruary, there were only a score
of producers on hand. This, in
spite of the fact that there are
well over 200 producers in the
county, all of whom had re-
ceived notice of the meeting.
In addition, the executive had
planned a good program and
had made calls on some produc-

33.5% NITROGEN FERTILIZER
Ask any one of thousands of
Canadian farmers who have used
Aeroprills for top dressing winter
wheat and he'll - tell you what a
practical and profitable operation it
has been.
Many farmers have made $3.00 extra
profit for every $1.00 invested in
Aeroprills!
Top dressing winter wheat as soon
as you can get on the land in the
spring will promote stooling, pro-
duce more stems, more heads and
bigger yields — in most cases 10
bushels more per acre when 100 lbs.
per acre of Aeroprills are applied.
Aeroprills are easy to handle and are
prilled and coated for uniform
spreading.

The samesituativlw developed
at the annual meeting of the
Perth Beef., Producers held in
Mitchell on March 7th, The
Meeting was well advertised in
the press but the attendance
was disappointing. This was an
important meeting since it con-
sidered extensive changes in
the structure of the organiza-
tion. The chairman decided
that the small attendance could
not express a true opinion of
all the beef producers in the
county. The result is that dele-
gates were appointed to secure
further information at a pro-
vincial meeting on April llth.
A second general meeting of
beef producers will be called
some time after this date. It
is hoped that farmers engaged
in the production of beef in
Perth will make a much bet-
ter attendance showing when
this meeting is called.
The Perth County Agricultur-
al Week and Seed Fair for 1963
is now history. Last year the
Perth Soil and Crop Improve-
ment Association broke with
tradition and held a four-day
fair. This year they made an-
other change—taking the show
to, the Coliseum in Stratford.
Not many farm people are able
to take advantage of all the
program and have to be con-
tent with the day or days that
interest them most. .
The executive, directors and
committees of the Crop Im-
provement Association are to
be congratulated on the excel-
lent program provided. The
panel on Tuesday dealing with
the dairy herd nutrition and
diseases was informative and
interesting. The panel on Wed-
nesday which considered milk
marketing brought out some in-
teresting facts on the market-
ing of milk and cream. One
panelist shgested that the
dairy groups support legislation
which would allow the coloring
of margarine provided it did net
resemble the yellow color of
butter. This is something most
dairy food producers will agree
with. The color will make no
difference to the taste of the
product. The 'real reason manu-
facturers want to color margar-
ine the yellow color of butter is
so that it may be passed off as
the naturally superior product
Incidentally, have .you ever sat
at a table where the spread was
called anything but butter? 1
haven't.
Of special interest on the
Thursday program, which fea
tured hog marketing, was the
talk by Howard Galloway, of
the Whyte Packing Co., on the
factors which have a bearing on
what the packer can afford to
pay for hogs, He also present
ed, in detail, a 'cost chart of
the various cuts and the per-
centages of the selling price
which the producer may expect
to receive.
The Friday program featur-
ed D. L. Parks, director of, the
Soils and Crops Branch of the
Department of Agriculture. Mr,
Parks impressed this observer
as a man dedicated to his work
and gave a fine restame of what
is going on in this branch of
the department. The entire pro-
gram coupled with the seed
competition and commercial dis-
plays was well organized..,
The $3.00, premium oto grade
A hogs will be restored on April
1. There is no way of knowing
whether this is a direct result
of all the pressures brought to
bear by the Canadian Federa-
tion of Agriculture and lesser
organizations. One thing is cer-
tain, the numerous resolutions
circulated on this subject kept
the issue before the members
of the Federal Cabinet and the
four -party caucuses continual-
ly. The Federal government's
support program for hogs has
been renewed for another year
at $23.65. The national aver-
age price in 1962 was $28.28
per cwt.
