CHURCH GROUPS HEAR REPORTS UNIT ONE, UCW Unit One of United Church Women of Northside United Church met at the home of Mrs. Frank Roberton Tuesday evening with 25 members pres- ent. After the reading of the minutes and the roll call, re- ports were given by the treas- urer and the card secretary. The group leader, Mrs. William Campbell, announced the. Pres- byterial meeting in Goderieh, March 21, with Mrs. Mills as• delegate, and the spring thank - offering March 26. The April meeting will be held at the parsonage, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Sillery then took over the program. Mrs. Papple read the Scripture and Mrs. Smith read a very in- teresting article by Padre W. Young. Mrs. Smith also offered prayer. The chapter on Korea, from the study book, "Rim of Asia," was very ably taken by Mrs. Sillery. She spoke of the origins of the people, their his- tory, culture and development of their religions. The influ- ence of China and Japan was stressed and .also the love of freedom of this independent little nation. Miss Rena Fen- nell spoke briefly on her visit to Korea in 1958. FIRESIDE GROUP Miss Nan Taylor, of the Sea - forth District High School staff, was the guest speaker at the 'March meeting of the Fireside Fellowship group of First Pres- byterian Church. She stated she had a grand experience on her trip to Phoenix, Arizona, last winter, and told the group in an interesting manner of the blue, blue sky, the desert, the Indians, the irrigation ditch- es, and last, but not 'least, the Grand Canyon. It was surely a lesson in geography for those who had not 'seen it. Mrs. Gordon Beuttenmiller; the president, opened the. meet- ing with a hymn,•and Miss Alice Reid led in the Scripture les- son, which was read responsive- ly. F. R. Cosford introduced the speaker, Miss Taylor. During the business period it was decided to hold the bake sale Saturday, April 20. Gor- don Beuttenmiller expressed the thanks of the group to Miss Taylor, and Rev. and Mrs. 1l'ry thanked the group for the re- freshments. LADIES' AID, The March meeting of the Ladies' Aid of First Presbyter- ian Church was held Tuesday under the leadership of Miss Jean Scott. The Dale and Dor- rance group opened the meet- ing by the reading of a poem by Mrs. lla Dorrance entitled, "How To Serve." This was fol- lowed by the singing of a hymn chosen by Miss Jenpie Campbell. The group was favored with a solo, "Those Lovely Things," sung by Mrs. W. Brown, choir leader, and Mrs. MacGregor 'ac- companied her on the piano. Mrs. Jack Thompson thanked the speaker, and the meeting was closed by the singing of a hymn, after which a cup of tea was served. ST. JAMES' CWL The March meeting of St. James' Cid, ' was'. held in St. James' parish auditorium on Tuesday of this week. Parish visitors for this month are Mrs. Clarence Malone and Mrs. Mike Williams. It was voted to send $10 to the Radio .School of Christ. Rev. C. E. Sullivan read a paper on the program for adop tion in Ontario for 1963 under the auspices of the Catholic Wo- men's League. The president, Mrs. Gordon Reynolds, is to at- tend the meeting an adoptions, to be held in London on Sun- day, March 10, and is glad to hear from anyone interested in accompanying her. New ..members, Mrs. Haste, Mrs. Haarnaert and Mrs. Van- derzon, were welcomed to the meeting. The parish clothing drive for the St. Vincent de Paul Society is to be held on April 21. A Lenten card party is to he held in the school audi- torium on March 19. The .nom- inating committee for the elec- tion of executives are Mrs. Art Devereaux, Mrs. Russell Pringle and Mrs. Alice Stiles. Nomina- tion forms are to be signed and handed in before March 19. The next meeting is the annual one, in the school auditorium, pre- ceded by a pot -luck supper at 6:30. As the main part of the meet- ing, the parish priest, Rev. Sul- livan, spoke on education of young people. Each member present was reminded of their resolution to bring one more active person next time. After the meeting was adjourned, Father Sullivan gave his bless- ing. The mystery prize was won by Mrs. Alvin Smale. During lunch Mrs. Jean For • tune sang a selection of .Irish songs, accompanied at . the piano by Mrs. Joseph McCon- nell. The group dispersed to the tune of "On Top of Old Smokie," by the popular mod- ern J. I. Carriet, followed by the marching tune to Pretoria.
