Miss M. Hud- son, Bell Telephone's chief op- erator here, says that New Year's Day will also show a substantial increase as compar- ed to last year's. The increase, according to Mr. W. Haysom, Bell Telephone manager here, is part of a cur- rent trend towards calling over greater distances. At one time the long distance call was. scarcely contemplated other than in emergencies or big business. But recent improve- ments in telephoning facilities and—perhaps more important —the actual experience of speaking to friends and rela- tives hundreds 'and even thou- sands of miles away, have made long distance calling more and mor,e a familiar activity. Station -to -station calls, ac- cording to Miss Hudson, are your best bet on Christmas Day, and in both station -to -station and person-to-person calling, knowing the number is of great assistance. "In calling by num- ber," she says, "you eliminate the time required to contact In- formation in the city or com- munity you are calling, and un- necessary delays are avoided." O'Leary's wife woke in the middle of the night to hear her husband creeping about the kit- chen. "What might ye be lookin' .._for, darlin'?" she called out. "Nothin'," called back O'Leary, "just nothin'," "Oh," said his wife cheer- fully, "then you'll find it in the bottle where the whiskey used to be." plies, Stratford, $475.33; Mrs. ,M"1,,,,, Mac Sholdice, supply teacher, ; $45.12; Mrs. Marjory Humph- ries, supply teacher, $60.16; Russell and Nelson Marks, ad- ditional bus mileage,, $10.0.00; Gordon A.
