WHEN HENSALL INSTITUTE MEETS

Christ. The speaker was intro-
duced, by Mrs. R. M. Peck and
thanked by Mrs. B. Beaton.
Despite the weather and road
conditions, there was a splen-
did attendance of 28 members
and guests at the meeting, pre-
sided over by President Mrs.
Fred Beer. Members answered

Mrs. Harry Caldwell gave a
most informative talk an "143

the Women's Institute. Mrs. Or-
ville Jones conducted a period
of carol singing, with Miss Greta
Lammie at the piano, and
Christmas greetings from differ-
ent branches were read by the
secretary, Mrs. Wilbert Dilling.
The Legion Hall was most
attractive in Christmas motif
with a beautifully decorated
tree; red poinsettas and ever-
greens accented the walls, and
the table centred with a lovely
red poinsetmta. Decorating com-
mittee were Mrs. Laird Mickle
and Mrs. James McAllister. In
charge of lunch were Mrs. Flor-
ence Joynt, Mrs. Alice Joynt,
Mrs. C. Cook, Mrs. W. O. Good-
win, Mrs. Dilling and Mrs. Em-
ma Shepherd. Program conven-
ers were Mrs. R. M. Peck and
Miss Greta l�,ammie; hostesses
were Mrs. J. McAllister and
Mrs. L. Mickle.

Feature Pageant
At United Church
Decorations in Christmas mo-
tif formed an attractive set-
ting at the United Church Sun-
day evening, Dec. 16, for the
presentation of a pageant, "The
Nativity," presented by the
scholars of the Sunday School,
under direction of Mrs. Verne
Alderdice and Mrs. Lorne Hay,
assisted by the Sunday School
teachers.
Main roles . in the pageant
were taken by: Mary, Donna'
Whitehouse; Joseph, John God-
dard; innkeeper, Ricky Buchan-
an; innkeep's wife, Janie Smith;
Samuel, Paul Drysdale; shep-
herds, Robert Taylor, Michael
Davis, Peter Williams, Jerry
Tudor; angels, Brenda Noakes
and Ruth Cudmore; reader,
Keith Hay.
Brian Smillie sang a solo,
"The Lord is My Shepherd,"
and prior to the presentation
of the pageant Mrs. Clair Mc-
Bride and Robert Forrest fav-
ored . with trumpet duets. The
junior choir occupied the choir
loft and sang several numbers
under the direction of Mrs. H.
F. Currie and Miss Greta Lam-
mie.
The church was filled for the
occasion. Rev. H. F. Currie was
chairman for the evening. The
United Church Women, under
supervision of Mr. Bill Gibson,
were in charge of the lovely
Yuletide decorations.

Pre -Christmas Accidents
Spoil Holiday Season
An accident Wednesday eve-
ning, Dec: 12, involving two
cars, caused property damages
of $1,000. The accident, which
happened on Highway 4, one
mile south of Hensall., involved
cars driven by Mrs. Cary Payne
of RR 1, Hensall, and William
McDonnell, of London. Mrs.
Payne was backing into her
laneway at a right angle to
the road when struck by the
McDonnell vehicle broadside.
Mrs. Payne and her daughter,
Mary, suffered from shock.
Charges are pending, stated PC

tachment,
An accident on Nelson St.,
at the intersection of Queen and
Nelson, Hensall, Wednesday af-
ternoon, Dec. 12, caused damag-
es estimated at $300. Anthony
Rieny Van Loon, RR 2, Kip -
pen, travelling south on Nel-
son St., and Milton Love, pro-
ceeding east on Queen St.,
came in collision with the Loon
car at the intersection. Chief
of Police E, R. Davis investi-
gated.
UCW Hold Meeting
The °Christmas meeting of the
United Church Women was held
in the church sanctuary, which
had been beautifully decorated
by Mrs. E. Chipchase's group,
who were in charge of the
meeting. Mrs. Chipchase open-
ed the meeting, welcoming the
women. Miss Mary Goodwin
read the scripture; Mrs. J. Tay-
lor gave an appropriate article
on "Keeping Christmas," ' and
Mrs. S. Rennie led in prayer.
Miss Sharon Strong, Seaforth,
was guest soloist and sang,
"What Christmas Means To
Me" and "How Great Thou Art,"
KIPPEN EAST INSTITUTE FINDS
BLIZZARD CUTS ATTENDANCE
The Christmas meeting of
Kippen East WI was held Thurs-
day, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m., at the
home of Mrs. Winston Work-
man. Due to weather conditions
and telephone communications,
the attendance was cut to 21
members and 15 visitors, in-
cluding the pre-school children
who entertained.
The roll call was answered
by "your favorite Christmas
carol." The children entertain-
ing were Linda Bell, Joan Fink-
beiner, Donnie Sararas and
Dwight • Kinsman, with recita-
tions..
A collection for the Chil-
dren's Aid Shelter at Goderich
amounted to $8.50, with Mrs.
Percy Harris the winner of the
Christmas cake draw.
It•was decided to postpone
theeuchre and dance planned
for Dec. 14. The Christmas cake
draw will be held Saturday, Dec.
22, at 3 p.m., in Drysdale's
store. Members are asked to
please turn in money and tick-
ets to Mrs. Drummond before
Saturday, Dec. 22.
Mrs. William Bell demonstrat-
ed a lovely Christmas center-
piece prepared by Mrs. Clar-
ence Smillie's willing hands be-
fore the meeting. The sixtieth
anniversary of the Institute is
to be held on January 28, in Ex-
eter Legion Hail, with supper
at 6:30 p.m. Kippen is respon-
sible for the cake and will have
more definite plans later.
It was decided to cut out gift
giving to club leaders and coun-
ty honor girls. Provincial honor
girls will receive a reward for
their efforts, and guest speak-
ers will be paid mileage one
way. The Agriculture meeting
will be held .at the home of
Mrs, William Bell, Jan. 16, at
2 p.m, Mrs. James Drummond
A man was visiting his neigh-
bor. They were sitting in ,the
living room talkin when the
dog came in and asked if any-
one had seen the evening pa-
per. He was handed the paper
and left. The friend was aston-
ished.
"That's remarkable! A dog
that reads!"
"Oh, don't let him fool you,"
answered the neighbor, "he on-
ly looks at the comics."

Santa Claus arrived in spite
of the snow and delighted both
young and old. A delicious
lunch of sandwiches, cookies
and ice cream brought a love-
ly meeting to a close. Lunch
committee were Mrs. Robert
Bell, Mrs. Ross 'Sararas, Mrs.
Rober Kinsman, Mrs. Tony Van
Loon, Mrs. Vivan Cooper, Mrs.
Alex MacGregor and Mrs. Glenn
Bell.
accompanied at the organ by
lylrs. Robert Pryde. The Junior
Choir, under the direction of
Mrs. Pryde, sang Christmas
carols between verses of a
poem read by Mrs. Chipchase.
The meeting was adjourned
to the Sunday School rooms,
where Punch was served. The
business portion of the evening
was °chaired by Mrs. E. Rowe,
the president. Mrs. Rowe an-
nounced that she had accepted
a position in the Huron Pres-
bytery and was giving up the
presidency of the Hensall UCW.
Mrs. Walter Spencer is accept-
ing the chair of the president.
LAC and Mrs. Harold Gay,
Lorna and Barbara left Thurs-
day for Sydney, N,S., where Mr.
Gay has been posted.
Jerry McClinchey left Thurs-
day, Dec. 20, by plane to spend
Christmas with Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Shupe and family at Cham-
paign, 111,
Mrs. C. Cook left by plane
Wednesday for Los Angeles,
California, to spend the winter
months with her daughter and
son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. G. M.
Chellew and family.
Mrs. Pearl Shaddick, who un-
derwent surgery at St. Joseph's
Hospital, London, on Wednes-
day of last week is doing nice-
ly.
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Moir and
Garry have taken up residence
in the apartment recently va-
cated by Mr. and Mrs. William
Crowell, on Nelson Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Little, Mar-
cia and Cheryl spent the week-
end in Windsor with Mrs. Lit-
tle's sister, Mrs. Alvin Ulch.
Chiselhurst UCW
Hold Meeting
Chiselhurst United Church
Women held their Christmas
meeting Tuesday afternoon with
President Mrs. Percy Harris
presiding. The theme of the
worship period was "Candles
of the Lord." A candlelighting
service was in charge of Mrs.
William Brintnell, with Christ-
mas hymns sung throughout the
service. Taking part were Mrs.
Brintnell, Mrs. T. Brintnell,
Mrs. Ben Stoneman, Mrs. R.
Taylor, Mrs. Gibson and Mrs.
Percy Harris.
The ladies will pack Christ-
mas boxes for the sick and
shut-ins of the congregation,
and Mrs. Alvin Cole and Mrs.
George Boa will convene, the
packing of treats for the chil-
dren of the congregation at
the annual Christmas party Fri-
day, Dec. 21.
The group voted $25 to the
White Gift Service held Sunday,
Dec. 16. Mrs, Alvin Cole gave
the missionary prayer, and the
meeting closed with a hymn
and prayer.
