Pioneer Museum
Has 22,058. Visitors
Huron County Pioneer Mus-
eum was visited by 22,058 per-
sons up to this week, Curator
J. H. Neill reported to county
council. In midsummer the
building was open from 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m., six days a week, and
1 p.m. to 9 on ,Sundays.
"We are taking from No. 21
Highway about 5,000 visitors a
year," Mr. Neill said, "who were
never here before and never will
be again. I have travelled from
coast to coast, and if someone
is selling something and his door
is open, I go in;. otherwise I
drive on. That is our position
at the museum. We have 22,000
visitors, Southampton museum
something over 1,000.
"I have been at this museum
work 27 years, and have built
135 models. If I live another 10
years I will; build another 50.
That is only one thing in the
museum, but they attract much
attention. There are many there

that you will not find in any
other place in the world."
Mr, , Neill mentioned that a
government official had obtain-
ed from him a 4ouple of old-
fashioned dash churns for an ex-
hibit subsequently shown in
Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.
He has a photo of the Premier
of Quebec operating one of the
churns. •
There are 6,000 articles on
display at the museum which
"never was in as good shape be-
fore," .the curator said.
"As a member of the historic
committee," said Reeve Frank
Walkom, Goderich, "I would
like to compliment Mr. Neill. I
had friends visit the museum in
the past year, and one of them
intrigued by the flour manufac-
turing process shown, called it
unique. We are very fortunate
in having a man, of'•the calibre
of Mr. Neill, who does not re-
gard his time as valuable, but
he is a valuable asset to the
town and country."
Mr. Neill said there are mo-
dels at the museum showing 18
different ways of making flour,
and five of them are workable.
Report of the committee was
presented by Reeve Alvin D
Smith, Turnberry. It took note
of the fact that of this year's
22,000 visitors to .the museum,
about 5,000 came during off
hours.
"We appreciate the efforts
put forth by Mr. Neill and his
staff in showing the people
through the museum and giving
them every possible' attention,"
the report stated.
"We reported some time ago.
that we had received a bequest
from the Gavin Green estate,
and we intend to erect a plagque
in memory of the late Mr.
Green, in acknowledgment no.
only of the bequest but also to
remind people of. a fine gentle-
man.
The history of Huron County
is still in progress, as has been

Of . Work Done By
Children's Aid
In her report to county coun-
cil as local director of the Chil-
dren's Aid Society, Miss Clare
McGowan presented on Tues -
ay an outline of the society's
protection work.
"During last month," she said,
"we opened or 'reopened 10
new protection cases for the fol-
lowing 'reasons; wife beating;
immoral conduct of father; im-
moral conduct of mother and in-
ability of the father to cope
with the children; mental illness
of both parents (and no visit-
ing homemaker available); al-
coholism of father; marital
strife and child snatching; child
beating; juvenile delinquency;
separation of parents causing
emotional and nervous strain in
the home.
"These, are the new families
we are working with to keep
the children with their parents.
This is the most hectic part of
our work, and Mrs. Ross does
the most of it. If the case is
likely to come to - court, Mrs.
Ross is the one who handles it,
and she does a truly wonderful
job.
"This part of our work is
very important, because it costs
far more to take p child into
care than to leave hini. in his•
own home. We are very grate-
ful to the municipalities who
understand this and assist the
faintly financially over a diffi-
cult time.' Laverty and dirty

definitions of neglect."
