Not withstanding a facetious
protest by Reeve Morgan Ag-

against sin," Huron County
council on a 24 to 11 recorded
vote, Wednesday, turned thumbs
down on 'legalized iotteries. that profit% might go to reduce

Reeve Ralph ,Jewell, Colborne,
asked: "Is there any information
as to what shard of the profit
would go to hnapitals if lottei-
les were legalized?"
Warden McCutcheon: I
think the committee felt the
percentage would be so small
that there might not be any
profit, and it would, be u-,aking
money for some private individ-
ual."
Reeve Agnew: "Does the com-
mittee take the attitude this is
wrong, and sin, this lottery busi.
ness? I am opposed to anything
sinful (Hear, hear!) but are we
going to take the business away
from the church? If we legis-
late all sin out, you are putting
the churches out of business."
Deputy Reeve Alvin Rau, of
Stahley: "Thousands of dollars
go out of the county and the
country to other places. i don't
know .what percentage goes to
hospitals, but I still think we
could have them (lotteries) in
Our own country."
Reeve Clarence Hanna, Eeast
Wawanosh: "There are not too
many in this room who haven't
a sweepstalre ticket and T
would like to see that money
stay in Canada."
Reeve Tom Leiper, ffullett:
"The matter should' he- left with
•the province or dominion;
county council is too small a
body. '
Deputy Reeve C. Farrow, Ex-
eter: "1 an not in. sympathy
with encouraging the idea we
should get something for noth-
ing. These small affairs handled
locally are one thing, but when
you get into th.e business of en-
couraging people to think they
are going to get something for
nothing, I was not in favor of
it. There. is sufficient along this
it. There is sufficient along that
line as it is."
As discussion ended, Reeve
Harvey Coleman, Stanley, re-
marked: "These tickets they are
selling on the Irish sweepstake
are illegal, but sold under
cover."
For adoption of the cotninittec
report that "we do not concur"
in the Prescott-Rupssell propos,
al, 24 members voted "ye" and
11 "nay." -,
