SIMPLE DECO/RATIONS
Cut Christmas Costs
On Gadgets, Gimmicks
By GISELLE MATHERS
Every Christnias that comes
along seems to bring with it a
galaxy of new ideas in Yuletide
decorating.
The traditional Symbols of the
Christmas tree, holly and mistle-
toe, 'have been almost over-
shadowed by every type of glit-
ter 'and gimmick ranging from
aluminum Christmas tree s,
fibreglass lights, and elaborate
flower and tinsel table decora-
tions to model churches that
play Christmas carols.
Surrounued by such a confus-
ing array of decorating ideas, it
is not surprising that many
homes look like overfastooned
Christmas trees, a hodge-podge
of colored lights, silvery baubles
and evergreen wreaths.
The keyword to Christmas
decorating is simplicity. Choose
a theme and stick to it. Don't
be tempted by colorful gadgets
that will clutter and clash with
your decorating scheme. With
a little effort and imagination
you can have an attractive and
tasteful Christmas decor.
Almost every home has a
Christmas tree for the holiday
season and decorating it pro-
vides a lot of family fun. But
instead of choosing lights and
silver balls at random, choose
a color scheme.
If you have the traditional
evergreen spruce or pine, the
Christmas colors . of red and
green' make an attractive dis-
play. Green lights enhance the
color of the tree and cast a
pretty reflection on the red
ornaments.

Don't buy an ill -matched col-
lection of tinsel sprays, syn-
thetic flowers and elaborate
candles but concentrate on a
more natural theme.
A well -shaped piece of silver
birch provides an attractive
base for pine cones, sprigs of
Christmas evergreens and one
or two silver;, leaves and balls
that can be -bought cheaply at a
chain store.
A couple of plain red candles
fitted into drilled holes in the
wood will provide contrast with
the evergreens and a soft glow
to show off your best silver and
glassware.
Christmas wouldn't be com-
plete without a piece of mistle-
toe but there are more' subtle
ways of displaying it than from
a string attached to the light
fixture:
Turn it, instead into a hang-

But don't overdo it!
One simple decoration on the

jumble of patterns and colors.
Better ,still is simply a Christ-
