Rowing. In 1855, Canadian ability in this sport of stamina• and rhythm first became no- ticed. An eight -oared crew from Saint John, N.B., defeat- ed the United States champions at Boston over a 12 -mile course. Saint John 'won an even greater triumph in 1867, when a four - oared crew of fishermen went to Paris and won the world championship. In 1868, the Encyclopedia Canadiana records, this crew went to the U.S.A. and won b six -mile race for the.;champpion- ship of that county. Mean- while, Toronto's Shakespeare CIub had sent a four -oared crew to Detroit in 1859 to beat a Chicago crew for' the Great Lakes Championship. The great- est Canadian oarsman was the Torontonian, Hanlan. In 1876 he won the great Philadelphia - Centennial three-mile singles professional race. After a ca- reer of many victories he de. feated the Australian world champion on the Thames in England in 1880. Hanlan's superiority was such that he stopped several times in the race to thank cheering specta- tors. Once, he even lay down in his racing shell and allowed the perspiring champion, Tri- ckett, to catch up. Hanlan suc- cessfully defended his world's championship six times before losing it. Another Canadian, Jake Gaudaur, of Atherley, On- tario, won the world's cham- pionship in f896. Mrs. Elmer Larone showed' picturesotaken abroad this sum- mer, and a most interesting manner commented on their trip. The beautiful pictures Were in color, and Mrs. Larone took the group in imagination to some of the world's most 'beautiful and historic far -away places. Mrs. Elmer Rivers ran the projector. Mrs. Wallace Ross moved a vote of thanks to all who took part in the 'meeting. "Come, Let Us Sing of a Won. derful Love" was the closing hymn, followed. by the Lord's Prayer. A social time followed and Iunch was served by the Andrews -Ross group. At last le ventured to question the host. "How in the world do you make a go of it out here?" he asked. Pointing a finger at a man lolling on the doorstep, the host replied, "You see that fel- ler there? He's the hired man. He works for me, but I can't pay him. In two years he gits the ranch.
