Repair UNow
Befo WinterWjncisBlow
Many people have contem-
plated much needed repairs to
their houses and have then post-
poned their plans simply be-
cause they couldn't find the nec-
essary money.
This need no longer be the
case. In 'fact, more and more
homeowners are. discovering
that federal assistance is avail-
able to them under the Nation --
al Housing Act. The Act auth-
orizes Central Mortgage and
Housing Corporation to give a
limited guarantee to banks in
'return for an insurance fee paid
by the borrower on loans made
for a wide variety of improve-
ments around the' house.
For the purpose of home im-
provement loans, a home is de-
fined as a house, multiple -fam-
ily dwelling, housing project or
building consisting of business
premises and 'family housing
units where the repairs, altera-
tions and additions may be fair-
ly considered to be primarily
for the benefit of the housing
units.
A home does not include a
building used as a hotel, motel
or summer residence, or for
seasonal occupancy. But it
does include apartment build-
ings.
Home improvement loans cov-
er the cost of Ihbor, materials
and equipment for many perm-
anent -type alterations, repairs
and additions.
Home improvement loans are
secured by promissory note. If
the amount of the loan applied
for, or the total amount of the
loan plus the balances owing
on other guaranteed home im-
provement loans on the pro-
perty, exceeds $1,250 the len-
der may take such additional
security.as is considered appro-
priate, including a mortgage or
an assignment of the owner's
interest in the home.
The maximum loan is $4,000
for a one -family dwelling. A
loan of $4,000 for the first unit
of a duplex, semi-detached or
multiple -family dwelling, plus
$1,500 for each additional unit,
may ,also be obtained.
The rate of interest on NHA
home improvement loans is six
per bcent and loans are repay-
able in monthly instalments, to-
gether with interest, in not
more than 10 years.
Application for a loan must
be, made by the owner of the
property and not by anone act-
ing in his behalf. A joint own-
er of a home or anyone renting
a property, provided the lease
does not expire in less than

three years following •maturity
of the loan, is eligible to ap-
ply.
When making application for
a loan, the applicant will be re-
quired to provide details of the
improvements planned and an
estimate of the cost involved.
The bank will also require in-
formation concerning the appli-
cant's income and financial ob-
ligations and details of existing
encumbrances against the pro-
perty. In addition, the applicant
must be prepared to Nstate the
assessed value of the property,
the amount of fire insurance
carried, and whether or not tax-
es have been paid to the last
due date, He must also agree
that he will not further encum-
ber, sell or transfer his inter-
est in the property without the
written consent of the bank un-
til the loan is fully repaid.
- It, may be more profitable to
plan certain improvements for
the winter months when men
and materials are more readily
available.

Bride -Elects Showered
A rather unique shower was
held in Zion Church recently,
when the ladies of the com-
munity feted two of their young
ladies, Margaret Britton and
Gladys Robinson, prior to their
marriage. Mrs. Jack Burchill
was in charge of the program,
beginning with a sing -song un-
der the leadership of Audrey
Annis, with Mrs. Chas. Roney
at the piano. Readings were
contributed by Donna Barker
and Mrs. Dalton Malcolm, and
Ethel Mae Mitchell favored with
piano instrumentals.
The two brides -elect were
seated in decorated chairs with
a background of flowers woven
into a pink trellis. Addresses
of good wishes were read by
Joan Britton and Nancy Lan-
nin, and gifts of kitchenware
were presented by Betty Ami
Barker, Marjorie Balfour, Don-
na Barker and Audrey Annis.
A delicious lunch was served,
and all present enjoyed a social
hour.
