Seaforth Native. Retires,
Honored at Owen Sound
A well-known Seaforth native
and graduate of Seaforth Col-
legiate Institute, John Hinchley,
BA.A., was honored recently in
Owen Sound on his retirement
as vice-president of the Owen
Sound Collegiate Vacational In-
stitute.
An enthusiastic golfer, Mr.
'Hinchley was a regular visitor
to Seaforth when golfing facili-
ties were in existence here.
The eldest son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. J. D. Hinchley, James
St„ Seaforth, he has one broth=
er, Harry, of Renfrew, Ont.
Mr. 'Hinchley is married with a
family of three—Elizabeth, now
Mrs. Don Lewis, of Toronto;
John, Jr., of the Niagara Dis-
trict High School staff, and Ed-
ward., a student at Toronto Uni-
versity.
The Owen Sound Sun -Times
in --a recent issue tells of the
presentation to Mr. Hinchley:
The outstanding feature of
the closing assembly held at the
OSCVI on Friday afternoon was
the presentation of a gold watch
to John Hinchley, retiring vice-
principal of the school. Mr.
Hinchley received a standing
ovation from the students, sit-
ting in the tiered seats in the
auditorium and on the floor.
In accepting the gift, Mr. Hin-
chley spoke of ,his memories of
the past and the students that
he was in school with and, the
students whom he taught. He
mentioned that, of the students
he went through school with,
some became very well known,
some lived outside the glare of
publicity and a few, like "three -
fingered Abe," became notor-
ious.
Recalls. Students
He mentioned some of his
"math" students who have be-
come well-known. One of them
went to the University of Tor-
onto and on a research project
developed the electron miscro-
scope which has been of great
benefit to all mankind. Perhaps
Mr. Hinchley's best known stu-
dent is Finance Minister Flem-
ing, although Mr. Hinchley dis-
claimed all responsibility for
teaching Mr. Fleming his the-
ories of taxation and money
rates.
Mr. Hinchley discussed the
growth of science .through the
estimated 10,000 years that man
has been organized. In the past
300 years he has learned
more than in the previous 9,-
700, in the past 100 years he
has learned more than in the
previous 200 years and in the
past ,20. years he has learned
more than in the previous 80.
This accelerating rate of pro-
gress will lead to many new
developments which should ben-
efit everyone, However, he
warned of the dangers of an-
other war, which would make,
World Wars I and, II look like
"mere pillowfights."
Mr. Hinchley urged the stu-
dents to guard the freedom of
the inquiring mind, which seeks
after truth and knowledge,
from those powers which .want
to control the minds of -rthe
world.
He stated that war is'
tI an -
made and he thought that if
scientists got together, they
could prevent war, through sci-
entific research, although poli-
ticians could not do so.
The, presentation of a gold
watch was made to Mr. Hinch-
ley and at the same time, Ar-
thur Pearson gave a few gifts
on behalf of the Grade 13 stu-
dents. These included an egg
to replace the turkey which Mr.
Hinchley received at every
