Facing binges,
Opportunities—
R. • G. Bennett
R. Gordon Bennett, Toronto,
chief of the marketing division,
Ontario Department of Agri-
culture, said that there never
has been any time that the in-
dustry of agriculture was fac-
ing greater changes, yet facing
greater opportunities, than at
the present. Mr. Bennett• was
speaking at the official opening
of the 108th Clinton Spring
Show on Saturday.
Mr. Bennett, a former agri-
cultural representative in Bur -
on County, from 1947 to 1p51,
said that one of the great prob-
lems in -the country today is
what to do with excess food.
Cool weather saw a slight de-
cline in attendance, but the
number and quality of exhibits
was higher than previous years,
said Adam McMurray, of Clin-
ton, veteran secretary of the
Huron Central Agricultural So-
ciety, which sponsors the show.
Eighteen -year-old Joanne Al-
ton, of Lucknow, was cpwned
Huron County dairy princess,
having won in a milking compe-
tition over three other contest-
ants, Marilyn Marshall, of Kirk -
ton, Barbara Watkins of Londes-
boro, and Dorothy, Howatt of
RR 1, Belgrave. Miss Aalton will
be eligible to compete in the
CNE Princess competitions in
Toronto later this summer. The
contest was sponsored in Huron
by the Huron County Dairy Co-
ordinating board.
John Deeves, RR 3, Clinton,
president of the fair board, and
Clinton's mayor, W. J. Miller,
extended welcome to the crowd.
Others who spoke included Hon.
Charles MacNaughton, MPP,
Exeter, minister without port-
folio; Douglas Miles, Huron
agricultural -representative, and
Huron warden George McCutch-
eon, Brussels. Tribute was pair
to Mr. McMurray for his effort
in promoting the fair, by both
Mr. Bennett and Mr. MacNaugh-
ton.
