WINCHELSEA NEWS OF THE WEEK
The children of Winchelsea
.school took ?art in the music
festival on Wednesday night at
Thames Roud Church. All the
schools in •Usborlie School Ares
took part.
Miss Brenda Martin, of Lon-
don, visited over the weekend
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Martin and George.
Mr. and Mrs. John Coward
visited recently with Mr. and
Mrs. Tom Coward and family,
Base Line.
The Elimville Messengers
held their regular monthly
meeting at Winehelra School
on Thursday afternoon after 4
o'clock, with their leaders, Mrs.
Elson Lynn and Mrs. Phil
Johns as leaders.
Mr. and Mrs. Eric Carscaden,
of Exeter, visited o Friday ev-
ening with Mrs. Garet Miners.
Mr. and Mrs. Beverley Mor-
gan and family, of Thames
Road; visited Sunday afternoon
with Mr. and Mrs. Newton
Clarke.

District Weeklies Win
Awards at Convent,on
On Friday and Saturday of
this week members of .the On-
tario Weekly Newspapers As-
sociation will be attending their
annual convention at Hotel
London, London, Ont., when the
Premier of the province, Hon.
John Robarts, Q.C., will be one
of the speakers. Despite the
pressure of election printing
and advertising advance regis
trations are comparable twith

manager, Werden Leavens, of
the Bolton Enterprise.
The president of OWNA,
Herb Campbell, of the Ad-
vance, Dutton, will preside at
all functions, assisted by Bert
Smith, of the Weekly, Port
Credit.
Lynn Lashbrook, of the Mer-
cury, Rodney, is the convention
chairman. The delegates will
hear a progress report on Cana-
dian Community Newspapers
Representatives, who are intro-
ducing a new process of facili-
tating for ad agencies place-
ment of national newspaper ad-
vertising in weeklies. They will
hear publishers who have
changed to offset process of
printing, and view the opera-
tion 'of electronic equipment for
making printing plates. In ad-
dition, plenty of time will be
devoted to the exchange of"
Where can one go 'round
the mulberry bush in Can-
ada?
Only in southernmost Ontar-
io, so far as mulberries native
to Canada are concerned. How-
ever, the Canadian red mulber-
ry is occasionally planted else-
where as an ornamental tree.
The Osage orange mulberry, a
small tree native to Texas and
Arkansas, has been naturalized
in Essex County, Ontario. Mul-
berry wood is the hardest,
toughest and most durable
North American hardwood.

MELVIN EL.LIQTT
Melvin Elliott, Mitchell, died
in Stratford General Hospital
late Sunday night where he
had been a patient for the past
ten days. He was born in Logan
Township, August 11, 1885; son
of the late John Elliott and his
wife, the former Sarah Shean.
On June, 12, 1912, he married
Blanche Boyd, and they farm-
ed in Logan Township until
moving to Mitchell in 1946. He
was a member of Main Street
United Church, and of the LOL
No. 908, Mitchell.
Champion county correspon-
dent - Mrs. George Lidster, 91
year-old correspondent of the
Dutton Advance for West Port
Talbot. Mrs. Lidster will be the
recipient of the Ontario Hydro
plaque to be presented by Wil-
liam Davis, M:P.P., vice-chair-
man of Ontario Hydro.

hart funeral home, Mitchell,
where service was held-Wednes-

chell; Mrs. Thomas (Lily) Hack -
well, Walton; 18 grandchildren;
