M M v Bert Gerald, and ,Illi)I ioulf Chief Bowling Infractors Doltbte' Diamond Advisoiry Council. HOW TQ MAKE 'SPARES The difference between a "good bowler" and a "top- ' notch" bowler bangs on "-the second ,siiOt in the frame. "The top-notcher is the bowler who can consistently pick up spares. It is quite possible to run up a 280 score in a game, and nev- erscore a single strike. Na- turally, every strike helps. But it's the bowler who can pick lip spares who usually comes out on top. Many bowlera tighten up ner- vously when they see corner pins or a two -pin chop -off star- ing them in the face. Just re- member, when you are rolling for a • spare, use the same ..de- livery you use for the headpin —you just switch your point of aim. A corner pin is the most com- mon "leave", here are the re', maining possibilities and'the way to spare them up: (111. A) © A 4 5-3-2 Leave This is the second most com- mon leave. Aim to' hit on the inside of the headpin. This en- sures you some pinfall even if you miss your target, and de- creases your chance of blowing by leaving the counter .pin standing. p (lil .._--B) O • •1• i • .3-2 Leave This, too; is a common com- bination's called a chop -off, Aim tonside of the 3 -Pin. It is best to shoot inside the head - pin, so the ball carries the 3 and 5 pins, and -the flying head- pincarries the corner 2.Pin. (111.-I') 3-2-2 Leave This is called a split. I? it is standing on the left side of the lane, try for a spare by aim- ing on the inside of the•coun- ter pin, thus cutting the 3 -Pin. acrossto take out the other corner. If the split is on the right side of the lane — 'just forget about that spare. Go for the counter pin first. 2-2 Leave Called "Aces -Up", and again forget about trying to spare. A spare can come from a lucky kick -back from .the back -board. 2-2-3-3 Leave . If you've picked thel headpin, Ylisregard the left 3 -Pin.. Con- centrate on hitting the counter —and you may take out the 3 - Pin too. It is silly to gamble 12 points on the chance of scor- ing coring. an . extra three points. For your third ball, aim to hit the right 3 -Pin heavily, to be sure of it, and -hope the 2 -Pin goes also. But remember not • to speed up your ;ball trying to make_. these spares. Otherwise you will likely lose . control. Next: TEACHING YOUR CHILD TO BOWL. • Sell that unnecessary piece of furniture through -a-Huron-Ex- positor Classified Ad. Phone 141. The program on Milk Market- ing in Ontariohad a listening audience of close to 2500 peo- ple. - I was disappointed oread all the old suggestions or solv- ing the Dairy problems, such as advertising, milk for schools, government subsidized disposal of surplus quota control• of pro- duction, etc. Surely if these had been the answer we would have done something about it before now. Or are they simply good topics for discussion, but not for action? I Blas encouraged to find one forum from Huron County mak- ing a practical and -positive sug- gestion. They said: "Take a leaf from the White Bean Growers' book and have producers take care of the disposal of the very small percentage of surplus." As I am sure this hasn't solv- ed all the problems .for the White Bean Growers, neither has it solved all the problems of the Wheat Producers, . nor will it solve all the problems of the Milk Producers, but it has been a real benefit to the groups that have used this method, and it could be_a mighty step for- ward for the Milk Producers. I was surprised to end no one suggesting producer processing or distributing. The consumer pays double the producer price "for fluid milk. I understand thatt- there is a_ Co-op Dairy in a near- by town that is doing very well for the farmers,- who supply it, and the last I. heard it was sell- ing milk at one cent less •per (pat to., the consumer. In checking. en milk _ pawl - prices I find that in the stores it is -currently selling at 3 pounds for $1.00 and up. Yet the farmers are paid on the basis of 5 or 6c a pound. There must be a nice spread -some- where. Processors apparently are finding it profitable to be- come producer in order that they will be sure of getting a supply of product to "handle. When producers already have the supply of product, surely they ,could find it profitable to process-•. it. In helping audit the books -of a local organization recently, I found that they had paid 32c per•. pound for broilers -for a barbecue last June. Broilers were quoted at 12c per pound at that time. This means rough- ly that a b'roi•ler that cost the processor 42c would sell for 96c. It is along this line I would like to see Milk Producers, at least, give serious thought. In closing, let me suggest that everyone listen to Farm T Him ..Monday night at 8:30. The topic for February 5th • is, "Technical a n d Vocational Training". Most of our Warm youngpeople will have to find employment off the farm. Let's see to it that they -are well trained. • LOWSPEED SLOTS EASIER TO CQNTROL accuracy with the fast, rock, but for the-Prditkary;.. player such 'proflcienc? is only a dream. - For him the quiet hack - weight take-outs are less likely to -disturb his effectiveness; Low velocity striking maintains the normal delivery Iswing and makes it much easier for a curl- er to concentrate on swinging ato the skip's broom. Immediately a man in the hack is asked for his "high, hard one" to remove an oppos- ing barrier of granite, his en- tire nervous system .becomes tense. lie thinks only of the rock to be . hit • and ,the skip's broom is unconsciously blotted out of his mind: His hand and fingers inevitably give the han- dle a twist as, he lets go and his Cape Canaveral effort us- ually becomes a futile blast, Effective striking can bere- alized with a little common sense on the part of the player and the skip. The head man on- the tee is probably the more guilty of the pair, so let us take. a look at him first. " Keep Calm Do pot use frantic nvr-violent signals. They only serve to panic your players. Use the turn with the great- est percentage. If a, guard and shot rock are involved (see dia- grain) call for the turn that might chip the winner if your player is a bit wide.
