The patient is grateful that a visitor has been thoughtful enough to come. He will not wish to hurt a visitor's feeling or seem unap- preciative, regardless of how sick he may be. A visitor should be .calm, cheerful, optim- istic and avoid all disturbing and exciting sub- jects. Hospitals suggest that a call first will as- certain whether the patient's condition warrants' any visitors. Nearly all hospitals have regular visiting hours ; co-operation as to these hours allows the patient to have ample time for rest and relaxa- tion. Too many visitors are a strain on a patient's vitality. It is often wise that friends be told they can show their interest in other ways, by sending cards or notes of encouragement. A few pleasant minutes do much to stimu- late a patient. Visitors should not exceed 15 min- utes if a patient is particularly ill. • Even the most confirmed smokers often find smoke odor obnoxious and nauseating when they are ill. But they will hesitate- to tell a visitor. Smoking where oxygen ie it use is an . ex- plosion- hazard. Avoid it. , Too many flowers are overpowering and sickenings—keep them coming a few at a time. Books, magazines, newspapers and games for entertainment and r&reation are most help- ful. Food should not be brought to a patient as hist' diet is especially planned to speed his recovery.
