we artved ip►C
'ape, Dorset, we
$a'yagradually realized that
though the sights and' sounds of
our surroundings are vastly dif-
ferent, our way of life is much
the same4as that which we had
been used to in Seaforth. The
white people who number
around 25-30 all live very cotn-
fortably in homes fully serviced,
with oil furnace, hot and cold
running water, telephone and
garbage collection. The homes
of the Eskimos are much small-
er, but they are generally waren
.and many have electricity and
phones.
The school day • is the same
length and it is interesting to'
note that during the past year
the weather was never sufficient-
ly severe to close the school for
even one day. The• office day is
also the same length and much
of the work to be done is the
same type of work to be done
in an office in the south. The
day of the housewife varies only
to include the making of bread
and the opening of innumerable
cans.
The buildings .of the settle-
ment itself are scattered over
the sides of hills which slope
down to an oval bay 6,000 feet
long and 3,000 feet wide. On all
sides are rugged hills some ov-
er 600 feet in height. Some
snow still clings to the sides
of these hills and some ice still
floats in the bay. Everyone is
hoping that the right 'combina-
tion of wind and tide will sweep
these remaining ice floes out
to sea within the next few days
for the mail'plane, a Canso fly-
ing boat, is due to arrive from
Moosonee on July 15. The last
mail arrived on May 20 aboard
a DC -3, the plane used in winter.
Small Otter aircraft from Fro-
bisher continue to arrive and
land on the ice of the bay right
up to June 4, but even that
seems a long time ago now and
it will indeed •be an exciting
day when a plane comes once,;
again. The only conveyance to
drop out of the sky recently has
been a helicopter, manned by
two, representatives of the Dept.
of Mines and Technical Surveys
who are doing a week's survey of
this vicinity.
It is amazing how quickly one
becomes accustomed to one's
surroundings. The tiny Eskimo'
baby that so held, our attention
when we passed through Fort
Chimo would not now cause us
to take a second look, Our Donna
often wanders around the settle-
ment wearing an "amoutik" bor-
rowed from an Eskimo mother
and inside it a brown skinned
