BELL LINES by -W. W. Haysoni your telephone manager Telephone By Candlelight Talking with a young friend of mine not too -long ago, I was asked how it is that during a power failure the telephone continues to work.. The lad was excited and • pleased one day •'when ata the lights went o'ut in his neighbourhood, • and wanted to share his glee with an- other lad across town. ,,-But he was frustrated because he thought the telephone wouldn't work either. However,, on picking up the phone, he was amazed to find that it DID work, This led him to assume that the telephone company has a separate*power supply. Well, we do, and we don't! Like everyone else, we depend on commercial power; and commercial power keeps your telephone working' day in, day out, just as it does your lights, But telephone service • is vital, and so all our exchanges—including Seaforth, of course -.- have standby power sources in case of emergency. The instant our equipment detects.. a power failure. it switches onto reserve battery power than can keep the exchange operating for many hours. And diesel -driven emergency generators are kept in readiness at strategic points throughout our territory to be brought in immediately to keep any exchange operating indefinitely. Power failures are very infrequent these days, but severe storms, construction accidents, etc,, can and de cause disruption every once in a while. Though these are usually short-lived—thanks to the diligence and pub- lic spirit of the power -commission employees—it :is still reassuring (and sometimes even romantic) to be able to "telephone by candelight." Mr. "Bob" was recently appointed as installation and repair foreman for the Goderich territory with headquarters at Clinton from where he is responsible for plant forces who install and repair, your telephone service in Goderich, Clinton, Seaforth, Hensall, Exeter, Crediton; Centralia. Augmenting Bob's staff, at -12 Rattenbury St., Clinton, 9s the employee who looks after the tet board and repair calls, and three young ladies re- sponsible for processing of orders to facilitate your service, - ,It's a big responsibility, but p8i1}.a• 11 Mears'- experience with Robert yeoman E e f London, Saulte Ste. Marle;,i'ar " Sound and Woodstock as installer, switchboard installer and tepairman, test board, and work on complicated key' installations will aid him in his responsibilities here. Married with ,two ehik drlen, the family resided in Goderieh. We welcome .Bob and his family to the Goderieh area.
