Have a problem?' write to Canadian social worker
Doris Clarik in care of this newspaper.
•
HIS OBLIGATION TO HER
DEAR DORIS — Shortly after
we met, my ' husband - informed
me that his former girl, friend
was expecting his. cliltd. They
did.not wish to marry .d.up to a
religious difference.
My husband Was pushed into
signing a handwritten paper to
the effect that "he was the said
father and would pay the debts
so incurred during this pregnan-
cy." We both expected hospital
and doctor bills. But she has
gone to, a home for the past four i
months and we've been nform-
ed by her mother that we must
pay $50 a week for this. Doris,
this is nearly $1,000, not count-
ing delivery. •
Can my husband be made, to
pay this bill? We can ill afford it
since I am expecting myself.
Alarmed
DEAR ALARMED — The 'am-
ount sounds unreasonable. Your
husband does have some obliga-
tion to contribute to expenses,
but this should be spelled.out for
him. Either a lawyer :or the
child care agency could assist in
pinning this down.
Most maternity homes are
sponsored by churches, but the•
girls are,, still asked to pay
board.
* *
DEAR DORIS I have a
friend in her late fifties whose
husband died last March. While
she is fairly comfortable finan-
cially she would like to take
some sort of 'job to fill in some
of the awful loneliness she is ex-
periencing.
She has suggested working in
a dress shop, but I feel this isn't
a very fulfilling job,. and unless
she does something a little more
absorbing, she will really only
be filling in her time until death.
She has no family at all. And no
training at all.
, Concerned
DEAR CONCERNED — Sell-
ing dresses could be exciting —
for the right person. Or scrub-
bing floors. What seems boring
to .you May ,be fulfilment" for
another.
If your friend is healthy and
ambitious, there's something
she ean do' and • enjoy. If she
wants training she can go right
ahead and -get it. -Medical
science has given us 20 extra ac-
tive years to use as wewill. •
Have her discuss things with a
local social or educational coun-
sellor.
DEAR DORIS — My husband
asked me to write 'tb you. We've
been' happily married for 111'
years.
Our problem is smoking. I've
never smoked so I don't know
his problem. He quit when we
were married. When I , was in
the hospital he started again, He
quit again for three years. Now
he has started again.
He says, he doesn't want to
smoke, but his jcib isn't the best.
He doesn't know what to do. He
was loOking so good and feeling
good before he started aaain.
I'm sick- thinking about it.
• Please Help
DEAR PLEASE He. does
what -thousands do: reaches for
a , fag when he's worried or
tense. The idea being to release
tension. •
The theory might be o.k. if it
weren't for the faet that cirgaret
smoking prnduces its own rea-
sons for worry'—serious worry.
Threats to health which are only
too real.
. Has it solved his job problem?
No! Perhaps he should be dis-
cussing what's wrong, with
someone in authority, Perhaps
some further study or self-im
provement would prepare., him
for advancement. Far better
than resigning himself to the
false comfort Of a smoke!
Thousands have banished the

habit for keeps, and • so can he.
There are some tried and true
techniques, and I am sending
you a leaflet entitled "Why
Smoke?" which goes into detail
(This leaflet may be had by
anyone writing in and enclosing
ten cents. and a stamped, self-
addressed envelope.).
Confidential to Second Mate—
If there is a mature rove bet-
ween you, go ahead. The little
girl needs a "new Mummy", as
she herself indicates. Be ready
to play with her and shareher
interests. Give her the love she
needs and she and' her dad will
adore you for it.
* * *
CONFIDENTIAL TO IMPOS-
ED ONE—One thing I know for
sure is that as long as you keep
hailing your grown-up girl out
of her iThancial difficulties,.
she'll keep getting into them.
Much as it may seem hard-
hearted ,you will. be kind when
you. make her face the music
herself,
One thing you might do is
visit the family conselling ser-
vice where she is working, and
talk with a•worker there. Then
you could tell your daughter
that if she ever needed,to talk
things, over with someone,
there is a counsellor there
trained to help; and that her
confidences will be held sac -
'red.
• CONFIDENTIAL TO SKIN
TROUBLE — Could it be your
teen-ager- is . one of -those -who
slips off the diet once in a
while? If the rules say "np
chocolate," and they usually do,
it-fneans 'not...one single choco-
late, no Chocolate bars, no ditto
ic:.e cream, no cocoa.
Treatment also calls for scru-
pulons cleanliness. I'm sending
you a helpful leaflet on the
subject of adolescent acne.
(Available to other readers for.
ten cents and a stamped, self-
addressed envelope.)

Tubereulogis Associations, -has
returned from Highland ark,
Illinois, where she attended an
eleven -day National Tuberculos-
is Association Institute for pro:
fessional staff members of lo-
cal, provincial and national TB
associations.
With over 6,000 infectious
cases of TB a year in Canada,
the disease is -by no means
beaten yet anaccording • to
Mrs. Davidson is our most ser-
ious communicable disease. It
is estimated that 6,000,01:10 Can-
adians harbor live TB germs in
their, bodies --a huge reservoir
of potential infection in the
general population. Drugs only
stop the germs from multiply-
ing and close to 10 per cent
of new cases are now showing
resistance to at least one of
the drugs, and the percentage
is apparently growing. Re-
searchers are trying to discover
new anti -TB drugs, but with no
success.
Individuals, can protect them-
selves and their family with a
checkup for; the disease once. a
year. Mrs. Davidson said this,
Means a tuberculin skin test,
and, if it is positive, a chest
X-ray. Both are available at
local chest clinics, without
charge. Local associations take
part in the NTA Institute as a
means of assisting in the pro-
fessional development of staff
members.
