Mr. Stewart. !"Apart from the
human suffering entailea, they
represent a serious economic
loss to the farm family. The
Ontario . Farm Safety Council
recently announced Farm Safe -
t/ Week and is to be commend-
ed for the leadership they have
given in this important aspect
of our agricultural industry."
Statistics show that the hay-
ing season, with its hurried op-
erations and mechanical equip-
ment, tends to promote poten-
tial accident situations.
"Prevent possible accidents
by making sure that the hay-
ing machinery, wagon racks,
elevators, hay ropes, and; all
other equipment are in good
condition," says the Safety
Council. "Faulty equipment may
not only cause accidents, but
lead to expensive, time-consum-
ing breakdowns."
In keeping with "Safety
Week", Ontario Junior Farm-
ers are promoting the distribu-
tion and sale of "Slow Moving
Vehicle" signs. These signs
placed on vehicles using the
highway are a means of pre-
•
venting accidents.
Traffic studies show that two
out of three highway accidents
involving slow moving. vehicles
are rear end collisions. For
daylight, when nearly all acci-
dents involving slow moving
vehicles occur, the ,bright fluor-
escent orange of the sign is the
most visible color available, It
gains the attention of motorists
for distances exceeding one-fifth
of a mile. At night the re-
flective red border glows in the
path of headlights.
The hollow red triangle, with
its brilliant color, immediately
identifies a slow moving 've-
hicle. .
