The "Hurn tread" from

mad up •the Canada Company's
Hlarbn Tract, teas sitlrbeyed +l#
1827 and work on clearing
right of . way began ionnie1Tiete-
ly. The Company also offered
cash and free .land to persons
willing to ' open up• taverns 'on
the road. One of -the earliest
of these was operated by' Sebas-
tian Fryfogel, said to be the
1l1-st settler in what is now
Perth County.
Little is known of Fryfogei's
early life. However, one source
reports that "Mr. Fryfogel was
born in the Swiss Lantos . pf
Berne in the latter part of the
reighteenth tentury, and 9170-
-grated to America in 1806", ft
further states that he .settIeil
in Pennsylvania and' came 'tb
Canada in 1827 where he • tooit
up residence in "Waterloo".
The surveyor, J'blin McDdfi
aid, while engaged In layirt Mit
l8'ts along the Huron ROM,
.found Fryfogel's tavern "abllild-
Ing" on December 18, 188, 3Y4
miles west of Wilmot, and re-
ports that it was a "severe fros-
ty night—accofnlnodation bad".
Howeverr . Fryfogel's inn was
soon completed and became the
favorite : stopping • place for
travellers and persons settling
in the Huron Tract.
About 1844-5 Fryfogel replac-
ed his log structure with ' a
large two-storey .brick building,
which still stands and remains
one of the few examples in the
area of Upper, Canadian Neo -
Classic architecture:
A very able and enterprising
man, FryfogeI held various int-
portant municipal offices. He
was Reeve of South Easthope
Township for several years, a
township councillor,' `assessor
and tax collector, and in. 1851
became the first Warden of
Perth County. Highly respect-
ed and active in community
life, Fryfogel died on June 10,•
1873, • .
His inn, now a private resi-
dence, provides visual .evidence
of mid -nineteenth century life
in the area. and is an interest=
ing example of the architecture
of this period:
