, DON'T COMPARE YOUR
MATES
DEAR DORIS—My wife was
a beautiful and lovely creature.
She died last yea& after 20
years of perfect marriage.
We knew her illness was in-
curable and we had many talks
about things I Would not have
had the courage to bring up:
her funeral arrangements, for
instance. She made me prom-
ise that I would remarry, both
for my own sake and for the
children.
I can hardly reconcile myself
to my loss. My jOb keeps me
busy daytimes, but the nights
are 40 hours long. How does
one look for a new partner—
or even begin to want to? At
present I can see nothing but
darkness in the future.
Bald and Shy
DEAR SHY—Your eloquent
letter painted a picture of rare
marital bliss, .a level of happi-
ness which many would give
their eye teeth' for.
Please don't rush things. Go
through your dark days with
what cheer you can muster.
Your teenagers are of an age
to pull together with yoU cheer-
fully in keeping things going
at home. Be sure you are pre-
paring them for the idea of an-
other mother.
When you are back on a
more even keel, a little light
will break. Never expect to
compare a second •mate with
your first.
Merely hope that a second
mature companionship can hold
its own strong. and enduring
values, which indeed it can.
to love them both. Even if
they can't agree with each
other. Your friends could pro-
fit by skilled counselling, and
your best move is to help them
find it.
* *
DEAR DORIS--Is it improper
for the guest to leave a tip for
the waitress when you've been
invited out to dinner? ,
For ,example: a friend took
my husband and me • to dinner
last night. Upon leaving„ my
husband also left a tip on the
table. Right or wrong?
Embarrassed
DEAR EMBARRASSED —
Wrong. This would look like a
criticism of your host's gener-
osity in the tip he 'gave.
* * *
DEAR DORIS—I love my boy-
friend. very much. We are
both 18 and he is the only
boy I ever wentout with.
But now this other boy keeps
asking me out. I know if I go,
Tom will want to break up. I
droll want to lose Tom, but I'd
like to go out with the other
boy just the same.
It seems like whenever we
talk about it we end up having
a fight. -

TO IN TROUBLE—With your
precarious health, it is twice
as important for you to come
out of likling and seek medical
help. Don't let precious menths
go by while you skimp on food
and live in fear. A lack of good
pre -natal care doubles your
chances of prematurity and
adds to the risk of your Own
health and the baby's life.
