First sods in the construction
of the new Community Hospital
were turned on Friday in a
short ceremony. Taking part

A prominent Malton merch-
ant,. Wesley Charles Hackwell,
passed away at his home in the

The house originally owned
by Col. Anthony Van` Egmond,
in Egmondville, has been sold
by the present owners, the
Brightwells, of Ottawa, to Mr.
Bradford Smith, Seaforth, with
possession Sept. 1.
The 50th anniversary celebra-
tion of the Belgrave Co-opera-
tive was held in the Commun-
ity Centre.
Edwin Raeburn Crawford, of
Stratford a former principal of
Seaforth Public School, and lat-
er of Shakespeare School, Strat-
ford, passed away in Victoria
Hospital, London.
Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Geddes,
London, recently returned from
the British Isles, where they
were received by the Queen.
Rev. J. H. Vardy, of Egmond-
ville United Church, has resign-
ed to accept a charge at Port
Dover. .
About 700 were served at the
dressed ham supper held ,at St.
Columban.

Mrs. E. C. Case broke her
ankle,
Garnet Allan, Hensall, is
patient in Victoria Hospital,
London, receiving treatment for
an injured left hand received
when a grain hoist, at a Hen-
sall mill, fell on his hand, crush-
ing it•
The UDPC are receiying ten-
ders for a $75,000 office and
grading station.
Mrs. Clarence Rapien, Wal-
ton, won the $1,000 draw prize
at the Seaforth Lions Club carn-
ival. The special school chil-
dren's pride, a bicycle, was won
by Betty Plunkett, RR 2, Sea -
forth.
A 100 -year-old building mov-
ed to a new location. The for-
mer Horner residence, Goderich
St., was purchased by Joseph
Ryan, St. Columban.
William McClure marked his
95th birthday.
August 20
Mr. and Mrs. Hector Knight
were guests of honor at a fam-
ily gathering to celebrate their
25th wedding anniversary.
A contract, amounting ,to
$796,643.00 with W. A. McDou-
gall Ltd., London; for the con-
struction of the new Seaforth
Community Hospital, was ap-
proved.
On Saturday evening about
375 persons attended a shower
for Mr. and Mrs. Warren Shol-
dice.

Gerald K.' Holland, Dublin,
ended a hobby of 24 years when
he sold his entire herd of Chin-
chillas last week. Almost 250
were sold in one of Canada's
largest sales.
Fire destroyed- a barn on the
farm owned by Andrew Crozier
on No. .8 Highway, west of Sea -
forth.
The death of James Ballan-
tyne, a former Usborne resident
and for nine„years South Huron
MLA, occurred in his 92nd year.
A few boards are all that re-
mained of the 40 -year-old grand-
sta{id at Seaforth Agricultural
Park after society directors tore
down the structure at a series
of bees.
The carnival proceeds at the
Lions Club Park this year were
over $3,400.
September 3
About 150 people gathered at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. John
Glanville, McKillop, to honor
them on their 25th wedding an-
niversary.
It was 50 years ago that Mr.
and Mrs. Lorne- Wilson, Bruce -
field, were married and attend-
ed the Toronto Exhibition.
A total of 93 donors took part
in the Red Cross blood donors
clinic.
The entries of Ephraim Snell,
Hullett, won the best ram, best
ewe and reserve best ewe in
the Leicester sheep classes at
the CNE.

A farewell party was held at
Brodhagen Hall Thursday eve-
ning for Mr. 'and Mrs. Ross Mc-
Lean (Arbutus Snijth), prior to
their leaving to reside in Cali-
fornia. '
Rev. A. Johnston, 69, .Strat-
ford, died at Stratford General
Hospital. He had been the min-
ister at Brucefield and Kippen
United Churches.
SDHS students who have re-
ceived Province of Ontario .burs-
aries include: University, Mary

McKillop council has accept-
ed. the tender of Dominion
Road Machinery, Goderich, for
a new grader.
Members of Seaforth Hospital
Auxiliary prepared for. a .new
season of activity on Tuesday
with a pot -luck supper at the
Lions Park pavilion. An initial
payment,of $6,000 on the auxil-
iary. pledge- of 410,000 was -.ap-
proved.

'Mrs. J. B. Russell, well known
in the community for her activi-
ties in the town, passed away.
Mrs. George Little marked
her 90th birthday at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Willis
Dundas. .
Warrant Officer Class 1, Ern-
est M. Williams recently retir-
ed from the RCAF. WO 1 Wil-
liams has moved to Seaforth
and is occupying his residence

The 99th anniversary of Duff's
United Church, Walton, was
observed with Rev. W. J. ten-
Hoopen, of North Street United
Church, Qoderieh, as the guest
speaker. •
Mrs. Tony Phillips and Mrs.
Ella Munro captured the ' Mc-
Lean trophy, when Seaforth La:
dies' Lawn Bowling Club held
the annual competition.
Rev. Alan Scott became min-
ister of Egmolidville Church.

Mrs. Mary Malcolm, 72, Dub-
lin, has been in regular attend-

years, and since 1911 has miss-
ed •but one fair. •

When a school bus moved
forward as students were being
picked up at SDHS Friday morn-
ing, Tom Wilbee, a driver for
Habkirk Transit Service Ltd.,
was crushed against another bus
parked in front. He was remov-
ed to Victoria Hospital, Lon-
don.
Fred Sloman, of Clinton, suc-
ceeded Mrs. Joseph McConnell,
Seaforth, as president of the
llama- Unit of the Canadian
Cancer Society. •

October 22
A two -car crash two miles
south of Exeter, claimed the
lives of two Seaforth women,
Mrs. Elmer Larone and Mrs.
John R. Talbot.
About 200 members of the
Canadian Order of Foresters, re-
presenting 171 lodges, attended
the annual Western Ontario
Provincial Assembly convention
held at the Elm Haven Motel,
Clinton.
October 29
Forty-three meinbers, includ-
ing guests, of Kippen East Wo-
men's Institute, enjoyed a bus
trip to Hamilton, •
OPP Constable D. A. Bower-
ing, who has been in charge of
the Seaforth OPP detachment
since July, 1960, has been post-
ed to Walkerton. •
Work began at the Post Of-
fice to provide a new lock box
area and improved sortation and
office accommodation for the
staff. -Frank Kling ltd. is the
contractor.
Sunday marked the observ-
ance of the 100th anniversary
of the occasion in 1864 when
church services were first held
on the site of the present
Northside United Church.
Mrs. Ervin Sillery, Brucefield,
had the misfortune to put her
arm through a storm window,

Seaforth marked the conver-
sion of the Bell Telephone to
dial system after 80 years of
service here.
Gerald James Scott, 17, Hib-
bert Township, died- suddenly
following a one -car accident on
Highway 8, west of Mit hell.
Solemn, tribute of the dead
of two wars and the Korea war
was paid at impressive serv-
ices.
Rev. Alan Scott was induct-
ed as minister of Egmondville
United Church.
Seven hundred ate turkey at
the annual Walton dinner in
D'uff's Church.
November 19
'A number of friends and
neighbors gathered at the
Orange Hall, Seaforth, to sur-
prise Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Andrews
on the occasion . of their 25th
wedding anniversary.
Top 'students among graduates
at SDSPF Commencement Friday
were Robert Muegge and Mary
Crich.
Northside United Church was
filled Monday when a joint fun-
eral service was held for three
victims of an accident, ;when
the car in which they were rid-
ing crashed into a bridge abut-
ment near Londesboro. Killed
in the crash were Donna Jean
Gordon, Gordon Ross Driscoll
and Patricia Gail M'cCluskie.
The honor of making 'the first
phone call through the new dial
exchange at Seaforth went to a
former chief operator, Mrs. Fos-
ter T.' Fowler, of Mitchell, the
former Minnie Habkirk, who
served from 1912 to 1938.,
November 26
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Elliott
were honored at a surprise par-
ty at their home, to congratu-
late' them eh their 25th wed-
ding anniversary.
Seaforth's new Snow Queen
is Cathy Phillips, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Tony Phillips, Sea -
forth.
Seaforth Lions marked forty
years of service to the Seaforth
community, when representa-
tives of clubs throughout the
district joined with them at a
dinner in the Legion Hall.
Mrs. N. Dunn celebrated her
97th birthday at her home.
The first heavy snowfall of
the season on Friday contribut-
ed to an accident near St. Col-
umban that sent two men to
hospital. James Kerr, 37, Lon-
don, received a fractured arm
and dislocated shoulder, while
Ralph Grieve, of Kitrhener, has
serious liver and chest injuries.

sels, secured the highest priced
bull at the Huron County Fall
