Mrs. Kenneth McDonald pre-
sided for the Christmas meet-
ing _of -the Walton Women's In-
stitute ?Wednesday evening. Af-
ter the opening exercises, Mrs.
George Hibbert read the secre-
tary -treasurer's report. The roll
call was answered by "a Christ-
mas carol." Five dollars Was
sent to• the adopted child in
Hong Kong. •
It was decided to go 'half
with the hall board on euchre
parties. Committee for Jan. 8th
euchre will be Mrs. Clarence
Martin, Mrs. Herb Williamson,
Mrs. Harold Bolger, Mrs. Roy
Williamson; January 22nd, Mrs.
William Humphries, Mrs. Nel-
son Marks, Mrs. Nelson Reid,
Mrs. Torrance Dundas.
Mrs. Torrance Dundas report-
ed that proceeds from cook
books sold amounted to $167.28
with a few more for sale.
Mrs. Alvin McDonald and
Mrs. Wilbur Turnbull are to
inquire about a dumbwaiter for
the hall. Mrs. Wilburn Turn-
bull, Mrs. Margaret Humphries
and Mrs. Wilfred Shortreed
were conveners for the follow-
ing .program: A Christmas read-
ing by Mrs. W. Shortreed; a
duet by Sherrill Craig and Carol
Wilbee, "Star of the East," ac-
companied by Mrs. Ian Wilbee,•
was enjoyed. Mrs. Ronald Ben-
nett was high prize winner and
Mrs. John Marshall, low, for
guessing the number of articles
sewn on a coat worn by Mrs.
W. Shortreed.
Christmas carols were. sung
with prizes given. A doll shop
contest was conducted with ev-
eryone taking part. Santa Claus
arrived and distributed gifts
to all. Mrs. William Humphries
acted as auctioneer for a cookie
auction. Lunch was served by
Mrs. Peter McDonald, Mrs.
Stewart' Humphries, Mrs. Ern-
est Stevens; Mrs. Nelson Reid
and Mrs. Nelson Marks.
Mark Christmas Sunday •
Christmas Sunday was observ-
ed in Duff's United Church last
Sunday morning with the min-
ister, Rev. Arthur Higginboth-
am conducting the service. Spe-
cial music was provided by Mrs.
Harvey Brown and Mrs. Jack
Bryan on the organ and piano.
Burns' UCW
Has Meeting
Seventeen members of Burns'
UCW- met -at' the• home of 'Mrs:
Ed. Salverda on Wednesday for
the . Christmas meeting. Mrs.
George Smith presided and op-
ened the meeting with a suit-
able Christmas reading. "0
Come, All Ye Faithful," was
sung, and Mrs. Hulley offered
prayer. Miss Ida Leiper read
Luke ,2, chapter 1-20, about the
birth of Jesusu. • Mrs. Smith,
read a chapter from "The Word
and the Way." Mrs. Robert
Jamieson read a poem, "These
Precious Gifts." A hymn was
sung in the Dutch language by
Mrs. Ed, Salverda,: Sr., Mrs. Ed.
Salverda, Jr., and Mra. Pete
Salverda, "Glory to God • in the
Highest." Mrs. Smith gave a
reading, "December Night,
"Long,. Long Ago"; hymn, "The
First Noel"; Mrs. Harvey Tay-
lor read "The First Christmas
Night. of All", followed by the
hymn, "Silent Night" and the
Lord's Prayer in unison.
The meeting was turned over
to Mrs. Ed. Bell, the president,
who read the poem, "The Mo-
ment of Birth," The minutes of
the previous meeting were read
by Mrs. George Watt, also sev-
eral thank -you notes. Mrs. Har,
vey Taylor read the treasurer's
report, and collection was of-
fered. -
Mrs. George Watt read a let-
ter from Miss Vera Lyon, for-
merly of Londesboro, who is
studying language in Portuagl.
Mrs. George Carter read a let-
ter from Rev. Elizabeth ,New-
hort, of India. She asked for
more Christmas and greeting
cards. The hymn, "While Shep-
herds Watched Their Flocks At
Night,". was sungi'and the meet-
ing closed with a reading., by
Mrs. Bell and the benediction.

ing and the Young People's Un-
ion will present their annual
carol service next Sunday eve-
ning ih the auditorium of the
church.
Mrs. McDonald, of Teeswa-
ter, visited with, her daughter,
Mrs. William Humphries, ,Over
the weekend.
Mr. Percy Taylor is a patiept
in Scott Memorial Hospital, Sea -
forth.
Mr, Reid Hackwell, Exeter,
spent the weekend with his
mother, Mrs. Wesley Hackwell.
Mrs. Douglas Fraser and baby
daughter have returned home
from Wingham and District
Hospital.
Mrs, Walter Broadfoot visited
for a few days last week with
Mr,. and Mrs. John Henderson,
Seaforth.
Mr. Frank Marshall, of North
Bay, visited with his mother,
Mrs. John Marshall, last Thurs-
day. Mrs: Marshall accompanied
her son .to North Bay on Fri-
day where she will spend the
Christmas season:
Mr. Rollie Achilles is at pre-
sent at his home for the winter
months. He has been at road
construction work in Newfound-
land.
Miss Corrie Ruyter, of Strat-
ford, visited with Mr. and Mrs.
Jan Van Vliet over the week-
end.
Gary Bolger,son of Mr. and
Mrs. Jim Bolger, is iii "Scott
Memorial Hospital, Seaforth,
with pneumonia.
Misses Anne and Jean Short -
reed, of Western University,
London, are spending their
Christmas vacation with their
parents, Mr, and Mrs. Walter
Shortreed.
Miss Eilene Williamson, of
Brampton, spent the weekend
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Herb Williamson. •
Little Tracy Engel, of Cran-
brook, has returned home after
visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Har-
ry Bolger.
Mr. Bill Uhler, of Toronto
University, is holidaying with
his father, Mr. Ernest Uhler.
Mrs. John McDonald has re-
turned home after being con-
fined to Scott Memorial Hospi-
tal, Seaforth.

:'Well, the doctor prescribed
a shot of whiskey and two as-
pirins every four hours. Right
now he's ten weeks behind on
the aspirin and two years ahead
on the whiskey!"

cussion regarding, the discolora-
tion of the brickwork, any date
that was satisfactory. 4

Kippen East WI
The Christmas meeting of the
Kippen East Women's Institute
was held on Wednesday at the
home of Mrs. Ernest White-
house. President Mrs. Verne-
Alderdice opened the meeting
by reading, "Christmas is a
Many Splendoured Thing," fol-
lowed by the opening Ode and
the Mary Stewart Collect.
Business discussed included
plans for a euchre to be held
in Hensall in January, also two
quilts to be quilted before the
next meeting. One quilting will
be at Mrs. Cecil Pullman's, and
one at the home, of the presi-
dent. Christmas carols and "Sil-
ver Bells" .were sung, and Mrs,
James Drummond gave a paper
on "Holly."
Entertainment by the chil-
dren was provided by recita-
tions by Allan Bell and Don
Sararas; a duet by Marilyn and
Bonnie Cooper, accompanied by
their mother, Mr's. Lloyd Coop-
er. Mrs. Robert Gemmell' gave
an interesting story for the chil-
dren.
-A play, "Wanted, a House-
keeper," was presented by Mrs.
William Caldwell, Mrs. • James
Drummond, Mrs. Ross Sararas,
Mrs. Kenneth McKay, Mrs. E.
Whitehouse, Mrs. Robert Bell,
Mrs. John Sinclair and Mrs.
Lloyd Cooper.
Saiita paid his yearly visit,
and lunch of sandwiches, cook-
ies and ice cream *die served
by the hostess, her co -hostess,
Mrs. Robert Bell, and commit-
tee in charge.
