Bean Growers Protest
Marketiflg Board Order
Pressure from private com-
panies was behind an Ontario
Farm Products Marketing Board
order that the bean board sever
its .connection- with- its Landon
processing plant.
The village of Brussels Test
its only physician when Dr.
Russell W. Stephens, 68, died
Monday night of last week in
hospital at W-ingham. Dr. Steph-
ens had been in hospital in
June for surgery, and recovered
sufficiently to return to his
practice. He was taken to hos-
pital again on Sunday. Death
was attributed to cancer.
Dr. Stephens, a native of
Wiarton, Ont., was graduated
from University of Toronto
Medical School in 1922. He
practised at Chesley, Ont., and
was on the staff of Westminster
Hospital, London, before going
to Brussels in 1948. He was a
charter member of the Royal
Canadian Legion branch at
Chesley, tland a member of St.
John's Lodge AF & AM, Brus-
sels.
He is survived by his wife,
the former Glenna Campbell;
by two sons, Dr. Russell Steph-
ens, of Dalhousie University,
Halifax, and Dr. James Steph-
ens, Kitchener; by three daugh-
ters, Mrs. D'Arcy (Dorothy) Hig-
gins, Toronto; Mrs. Lewis (Isa-
bel) Peiloux, Seattle, Wash;
Mrs. Charles (Glenna) Cyr, St,
John, N.B.; and by 16 grand-
children. •
The bodywas at the D. A.
Rann funeral home, Brussels,
where a service was conducted
Thursday at 1 p.m., with Rev,
H. L. Jennings, .of_,. St. John's
Anglican Church, -Brussels, in
charge. Burial was, made in
Wiarton cemetery. •
This charge came from a
committeeman of the Ontario
White Bean Growers' Marketing
Board.
The order was the major topic
of discussion at a meeting of
the - bean board's District 2, Zur-
ich, attended, by more than 150
growers from Huron and Perth
counties.
(The bean board collects
eight cents per hundredweight
of beans from the growers,
uses 50 per cent of the money
-to finance board operations and
the rest to build and operate
the plant).
Mr, Hill said after the meet-
ing that the provincial board
has been trying for three years
to persuade the bean board to
sever its connection with the
plant.
"We have meetings and then
the board (bean board) goes
home and forgets about it," Mr.
Hill said.
Mr. Hill, who attended the
meeting in the capacity of a
"potential Huron County bean
grower," told the growers: "If
you wish to change the law,
then that is up to you. We in
the farm products marketing
board only administer it."
He claimed that several small
bean dealers, including the
Middlesex Farmers Co-operative
and the Elgin Farmers co -op -
The charge was made by Rob-
ert Allan, of Brucefield, a com-
mitteeman for District 2 and
world white bean champion for
five years.
'Mr. Allan said that five years
ago, the board had difficulty
making money because the Lon-
don plant was too big a mill to
handle one commodity.
"Now that the plant is on its
own and making money - it
cleared $7,605 this year - the
farm products marketing board
issues an order that we get out
of it," said Mr. Allan.
He contended that pressure
from private bean dealers had
been brought to, bear, saying
not a single complaint about
the plant has been made by a
grower.
Gordon Hill, of Varna, a
member of the. Farm Products
Marketing Board, told the meet-
ing the ,bean board has been
operating against the law by
subsidizing the London plant
with money levied against the
growers.
erative, have been forced out
of business by the London
plant, thereby reducing compe-
tition to the di -advantage of
the growers.
He said • that at the same
time, one dealer has grown to
the point where. he handles two-
thirds of the total Ontario white
.bean crop.
"We think this is not a
'healthy situation," he said.

The fellow at the bar kept
ordering two drinks at a time.
Not doubles, mind you, but two
singles. "The other one . is for
a departed friend," he said to
the puzzled bartenders. Tills
kept up every night for weeks.
Finally, one night the fellow
came in and ordered only one
at a time.
"Something happen to your
friend?" asked the bartender.
"No," replied the tippler.
"He's fine, But I quit drink-
ing." ' -
