St.Thomas'
Guild Has
Supper
The December meeting of St.
Thomas' Anglican Ladies' Guild
was preceded by a pot -luck sup-
per at the homp of Miss Doro-
thy Parke. Mrs. Harry ,Donald-
son asked Grace, after which
fifteen members sat down at
individual tablesmidst festive
decorations.
A Christmas contest was con-
ducted while the tables wera
being cleared. Winners were
Mrs. Bert Dinsmore and Mrs.
John Oldfield.
The president, Mrs. J. R.
Spittal, presided for a short
business period. Mrs. Bob Dins-
more read the treasurer's re-
port, showing the proceeds for
the year as $1,334.20. Sugges-
tions and ideas for next year's
bazaar were discussed, and the
meeting closed with a Christ-
mas benediction. Euchre then
followed, with Mrs. Alex Beth-
une being the winner.
The next meeting will be the
annual meeting at the home of
Mrs. G. E. Stockwell on January

Christmas In Many Lands
SWEDEN
On the day of the Swedish
Christmas, the people who live
and enjoy it are not the most
• important ones.
It is the people of the past -
the dead and gone, the ances-
tors who come back to live for
this one day -who are impor-
tant.

their ancestors return to their
former homes on Christmas
Eve. By tradition, the living
are the intruders on that one
night of the year, and they
must make up beds and pre-
pare tables for the ghosts of
those . ancestors.
Swedish Christmas begins De-
cember 13, when •the little girl
in each family becomes "Santa
Luciiil"-Lucia meaning "with
Light". She dresses in pure
white, with a brilliant red sash
around her waist, and wears a
crown of . evergreen bows, dec-
orated with seven .lighted can-
dles.
In the early morning, she
wakens the members of the
family by bringing them coffee
and cakes -and in this way, on
December 13,- is the Christmas
season ushered into Sweden.
Eleven days later, on Christ-
mas Eve, the .Swedish holiday
celebrations end -with the tra-
ditional trimming of the Christ-
mas tree, singing, dancing and
a special Christmas dinner,
called "Lutefisk".
GREECE
In Greece today, mothers car-
ry on a tradition begun cen-
turies ago, in celebration of
Christmas.
They, in ake. their ..tri}tiit-inn al
and justly famous fried cakes,
while the children watch in
wide-eyed wonder -listening to
the stories and legends told at
great length by the old people.

gends of "Christmas, Greece!"
is that of "Karkantzari" - a
mysterious half -human, half -
monster who wanders about the
land for .12 days after Christ-
mas, indulging in all sorts of
mischief.
Greek peasants invoke their
priests to -"Please! Please, make
the Karkantzari disappear un-
til next year . ."
A cross, entwined with sprigs
of basil is dipped into a copper
vessel . of Holy Water - and
each room of each farmhouse
is sprinkled and blessed.
Even. more persuasive, per-
haps, in making the Karkantzari
disappear is the burning of old
leather shoes, faithfully saved
throughout the year, over
Christmas.
As an expression of joy, hope
and love, singing has been a
part of Christmas celebrations
everywhere, since the first
Christmas one thousand, nine
hundred and sixty-four years
ago.
In Greece, as in countries the
world over, people gather at
Christmas to lift their voices -
in gratitude, in praise, and in
solemn remembrance • of the
birth of the Christ -Child.
Hold -Party
Thp monthly meeting of St.
'James' .Catholic Women's

a good attendance. The meet-
ing opened with prayer and •a

ported that thetravelling bas-
ket had brought in $110. Mrs.
Clarence Malone, membership
convener, reported 174 members
and four honorary members.'
Mrs. Frank Nigh, president,
thanked the conveners and all
who had helped with the
bazaar. Special thanks was giv-
en Frank Maloney and James
Kelly for their help.

are Mrs. Clarence Malone and
Mrs. Harold Maloney. There
will be no meeting in January.
