Avoid
Christmas
Calamity
More than any other holiday,
.Christmas is a "home" holiday.
There are more accidental
deaths in December, the Christ-
mas month, than any other
month.
This may be coincidental, but
it is a frightening fact. -'It calls
for a minor intrusion into the
holiday excitement and spirit
so 'the, lives and limbs of fam-
ily members may remain intact
and Christmas joy may not be
switched, in seconds, to tra-
gedy that will mar all Christ-
mases to come.
From the National Safety
League of Canada come these
pointers, sensible, simple and
brief, for' keeping joy and hap-
piness in Christmas:
Avoid. scattered toys that can
trip a careless walker.
Use care in climbing steplad-
ders; do not climb higher than
balance will allow; never sub-
stitute a chair for a ladder.
Salt or eliminate ice on steps
and sidewalks.
Even fireproof trees and dec-
orations must be kept far from
heat and flame. Dora tempt
fate.
Metallic trees can deliver
severe shocks and burns if de-
fective wiring leaks electricity.
Defective wiringcan also set
evergreens ablaze.
Dried -out evergreens should,
be thrown out at once.
The League suggests these
,points be follOwed for a Christ-
mas without tragedy:
Buy evergreen as close to
Christmas as possible; keep it
cold until it goes up in the
home.
Before erecting the tree, saw
an inch off the bottom of the
trunk, diagonally.
Place the tree in a water -fill-
ed stand, and keep the well
filled with water.
Keep it 'as far as possible
from heat and flame.
Use CSA -approved (Canadian
Standards Association) lights.
Discard old strings of lights
with frayed or exposed wires.
Do not overload electric out-
lets or connections.

HER TEARS ARE ONE YEAR
LATE
DEAR DORIS—What would
be the. best way of helping a
friend who is having a nervous
breakdown?
Jennie is normal a well -ad-
justed person, ver&_capable,
too willing to helpv'ae aged
and sick. Her husband died a
year ago, and she has tried to
be very brave about it.
Now she is weepy, .very
frightened, and whipping her-
self for being stupid about the
purchase of a house. There is
also a son who causes her to
be frustrated. She wants to
mother him, which he resents,
being 21 and very self-centred.
• OLD FRIEND
DEAR FRIEND — Stoically,
Jennie accepted her husband's
death. She,would have wept a
year ago. Now bottled up ten-
sions are giving way.
The role of a true friend is
to stand by, resenting nothing,
letting her unload as she will.
She ',probably tried to fill her
empty life by transferring her
affection to her son. Help him
see this; and help -her to find
new avenues of usefulness.
* * *
DEAR DORIS—We have been
married two months and I think
my husband is being unreason-
able. He wants me to write to
his mother as well as to keep
up all the correspondence with
my own family.
She is a critical, crabby old
woman and he knows it. Why
should I be dragged into toady-
ing to her?

FUNERAL
MRS. E. M. MacNAUGHT'ON
Mrs. Elizabeth Mary Mac -
Naughton, 80, died Wednesday
at Huronview, Clinton. She was
the mother of Hon. Charles S.
MacNaughton, Exeter, Ontario
Minister of Highways an the
widow of Alexander MacNaugh-
ton.
She is.survived by Hon. C.
S. MacNaughton; another son,
John A., Ladysmith, B.C.; a sis-
ter, Mrs. S. J. A. (Janet), Bran-
don, ' Saskatoon-, Sask.; - four
grandchildren: John, of Exeter;
Alex, Charles and Martha, of
Ladysmith, B.C.; Mrs. William
T. (Heather) Howitt, Waterloo;
two great-grandchildren, Hea-
ther Lynn and Richard Charles
Howitt,
The body was at the R. C.
Dinney funeral home, Main St.,
Exeter, where a private funeral
service was held Friday at 2
p.m. Burial was made in Tees -
water cemetery.
DEAR RBBEL—Becauge, be-
lieve it or not, you married the
family, Because she's his moth-
er and he loves her. Because
she's a human being, and will
appreciate 'friendship.
Come on, Rebel. You got your
man, don't you? Show his
mother you, are grateful.
* * *
DEAR DORIS—I must be the
oddball of all time because I
am absolutely petrified of sick
people in case they may vomit.
I won't visit anyone in hospital,
don't like to travel because
someone near me may be trav-
el sick, don't want people with
children to visit me.
All for the same reason. And
so my world is becoming in-
creasingly small. At 51, my
husband wishes to sell his busi-
ness and go and do some of
the things we have not had time
for, What will I use for an
excuse then? It frightens me.
PINS AND NEEDLES
DEAR PINS—Your neurotic
fear probably started a long
way back, when you were too
small to remember. Some inci-
dent with a sick person left you
with an unconscious aversion.
A psychiatrist could help you
talk this through to the point
where such an event would no
longer be unreasonably dis-
tressing to you. Get your fam-
ily doctor to refer you.
