A delicious lunch was served to bring an enjoyable evening to a close. Following was, the address: "It's the custom hear at Zion to gather all ardund and honor all the maidens who are to the altar bound; dear Audrey's no exception to this good old friendly rule, and many girls are gathered here with whom she went to school. Neighbors, friends and cousins have also come tonight, best wishes to convey to you before you take' your flight, and to tell you how we will miss you when you have gone awayto make your home with Russell, . and him honor and obey. "It really isn't very far to the house beyond the trees, and we hope you r11 come back often when a moment you can 'seize; We know you will be busy With two jobs instead of one, but with all this lovely trous- seau we think it will be fun, to make your house look pret- ty in colors all so bright, and what a cozy place will be to come home to at night. You've helped us here at Zion, in the choir you did sing, and the Sun- day School will miss you when you put on that ring. "Though we are loathe to let you go, we would not change your course, for wouldn't it be awful if of old maids we had a force; we know Russell really knew a good thing when he saw it, and we cannot really blame him when he went out and caught it; for at cooking, sew- ing, sweeping, . we know Aud- rey is the best, and when it comes to farming, she can do that to with zest. It isn't every farmer that is able to squire a young lady who can seep his books without the cost of hire. "May the years that be ahead of you be filled with joy and love, and may you always pros- per with blessings from above. We'd like you to accept these gifts from friends, both far and near, and hope your friends £ round Zion will always be held dear." Let us help you avoid the Christmas Rush ! COLUMBAN Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Murray attended the graduation , ban- quet Friday evening for their daughter, Lqretta, at the Holi- day Inn in London. She receiv- ed her diploma from Wells' Academy. Yule Customs Are Different In the north » the sun grew weaker and further ' away . in mid-December. The pedple held feasts and built bonfires to bring the sun back to life. The idea of the sun's return in early winter was fused with Christ's coming as the Light of the World. The Druids worshipped the mistletoe, gatheted it in special ceremonies and hung it in their homes. The ,Saxons used holly, ivy and bay. These customs lat- er clustered around the cele- bration of Christ's birthday. Burning the yule log in England and lighting the candles became a part of the Christmas event. Who lighted the first Christ- mas tree? The Romans may have. started the idea when they hung a fir trees with lit candles at their annual Saturnalia—the week-long winter festival dedi- cated to the sun god: They decorated their homes with green boughs and exchanged presents. Accounts persist that .Martin Luther introduced the tree lighted with candles as a Chris- tian observance. ,The Christmas tree was introduced in America by German Lutheran immigrants in the 1840's. The evergreens came to mean eternal salvation through Christ. The gifts sym- bolize God's great gift to man- kind, His Son;' Christ. Hymns and chants, in Latin, were the music of the early Christniases, and not until the 13th century were carols sung. These fey songs were • written in. every European language, in festive, yet familiar, style. Today Christmas is rich in carols and bells, candles and gifts, evergreens and fires—all to celebrate Christ's birth. Classified ads pay dividends. -- NOTICE -- For Co -Op Insurance Call W.
