K. Peek was report- ing to county 'council on Clin- ton Secondary School, Reeve Frank Walkhom r e m a r k e d: "There ,has been some contro- versy over the driver training courses; have you •any idea of the outcome?'' "We are looking for more instructors," Mr. Peck replied, "and I imagine we will soon have enough to carry on. Only two of eight were qualified, I understand, but we are carry- ing on,.. and starting to drive this week." "Funny that last year the de- partment, of `transport never brought this into the picture," said Mr. Walkom. "In Gode- rich we had instructors, and according to the regulations now they are not qualified, or possibly one. It necessitates a two -weeks course. in Toronto in the summer." • Mr. Peck mentioned that a transport department officer was at the• last board meeting, "and I do not think he knew You were getting away with it," "Three years," remarked Mr. Walkom. Mr. Peck in his report said the Clinton school now repre- sented an investment of $2,500,- 000 with the new addition and furnishings. There are 67 teachers on the staff and 18 non -teaching employees. The annual payroll totals $540,700. Student enrolment of 1,236 is divided as follows: Clinton 806, Goderich 151, Seaforth 136, Ex- eter 143. Average cost per pupil per day is $2.63. Use 10 Buses Ten buses are operated, Mr. Peck said. They travel .649 miles a clay and carry 583 pu- pils at a cost of $54,622, or 42 cents a mile. The board has optioned 4.7 acres for $11,000 for further expansion, parking lot and sports field. "We are considering another addition," he said. "This fall, for a first time, evening courses have been made available, and enrolment is 365, with 17 teachers. This fall we started a driver education course. There are 119 students. enrolled in this. The cars used are donated by the manufac- turers. through ,their agents in the area. "I think we have -one of the. finest., cafeterias in the area. Receipts last year were $31,272. The cafeteria is operated by Huron Clears Wingham Grant An application from Wing - ham and District Hospital for the grant available for new hos- pital beds, for early in 1965, was referred to the finance and executive committee. The On- tario Hospital Services Com - 'mission had approved a second - floor on the north •wing, to pro- vide 58' active beds. County council adopted the recommen- dation of the committee, of which Reeve Milton Oesch, Zur- ich, is chairman, for the regu- lar grant of $2,000 a bed in 1965 subject: (1) to progress of the building program,, and (2) avail- ability of funds. Mexican Beetles? -Just Lady Bugs The Mexican bean beetle is a very unwelcome immigrant in South Huron, especially in areas along the lake shore and over to No. 4 Highway, so when millions of bugs were no- ticed along the shore on alarm was raised, and an urgent call sent to D. H. Miles, Huron agri- cultural representative. Doug drove over from Clin- ton on his way to county coun- cil, and was able to identify the supposed beetles as lady bugs. They' do resemble the Mexican beetle, but "they are a beneficial insect," Mr. Miles said later at the county council session. Classified ads pay dividends. Beaver Food Service, and em- ployees are local and supplies purchased locally, when price and quality are equal. This costs 35 cents for noon lunch." Reeve Nelson Cardno read the Seaforth report, ..in absence of. Russell Bolton, detained on business. The Seaforth school has sev- en bus routes, covering 500 miles and transporting 314 pu- pils. Three buses carry 135• students to Central Huron Sec- ondary eo-ondary School. Of Seaforth's total of 186 pupils, 137 remain in Seaforth• District High School and 49 go to Clinton. Exeter Builds A building program to cost in the neighborhood of„ $659,000 was reported by Kenneth Johns in reviewing for county coun- cil the plans of Huron South Secondary ,,,School. "We are in process of nego- tiations for additions which will provide three shops, one sci- ence room, four classrooms for academic work. We have to add a boiler, and are going to change the site of the library on the 'second floor to., the ground floor. "I saw plans this morning that would indicate the archi- tects favor the southwest cor ner of our present school, and there would be an extension out on the lawn fbr about 12 feet. This will make . the library available without interrupting any of the, other school, and it could be kept - open, if neces- sary, in the evening without interfering, with the rest of the school. .They would have a sep- arate entrance. The)' total building pro- gram, including equipment, would be in the neighborhood of • $659,000. That i an esti- mate of the archite s, and we will not know de nitely until we receive tenders, for which we have not yet advertised. The grant for the addition will be 75 per cent. "Before any suggestion of a vocational addition was, made, we did apply to our municipali- ties, from which we got approv- al for an academic addition, and also approval from the Munici- pal Board; and then we had the proposal from the inspector that, due to the fact that our student population was increas- ing at such a rate that by 1968 we expected over 1,000, and since our present accommoda- tion is for about 670, you could see that we are bursting at the seams. We have six teachers who have not a home'•room for teaching. We. are occupying the library for classroom space, which is not what we would like. "We have 10 acres of land at our school: three for building purposes, two for gardens and five for playing field. We ob- tained this at the time the or- iginal school was built, and since then have made two addi- tions and are in process of add- inga third." Concern H u iron Huron county council agrees with Perth that a stop should be put' to the use of a new soft drink container which re- sults in broken glass on road- sides and fields. A resolution from Perth, re, ferred to the legislative com- mittee, set forth that these con- tainers break very easily,. and as there is no refund they are discarded, creating an increas- ing menace to cars, trucks and farm vehicles. Chairman Tom Howard , reported concurrence in a request that the depart- meatsof agriculture and high- ways take steps to prohibit use of such containers.
