Wheels are starting to turn,
more quickly at SDHS, what
with the first football game, the
first soccer game and the first
meeting of "The Echoes," the
year -book staff. Although the
football game here against God-
erich ended in defeat (22-7), the
team, under the new coach, Mr.
Sheppard, is looking forward to
the next game. The boys of the

went to Mitchell Thursday and
came home without victory, but
with not too -dampened spirits.
I am sure the teams will do
much better in the future.
The cheer leaders were also
out on the field Thursday, in
their bright red uniforms, to en-
courage the boys on. This year
they are under the leadership
of Linda MacDonald and are
busy right ' now working out
some more new routines and
stunts.
The yearbook staff has been
augmented by new recruits
from Grade 9, whom we are
very glad to see. President Tor -
ben Haarbye has already start-
ed -the ball rolling with plans
for a noon -hour dance (to raise
funds), a survey for opinions on
last year's yearbook, and plans
for advertising.
Well, just a few details to
give you a picture of activities

Anniversary
Huron County Junior Farm-
ers will celebrate the '50th an-
niversary of Junior Farmers in
Ontario at a banquf't and dance
to be held in' the Legion Hall
at Seaforth on Friday, Nov. 6.
This will also mark the 17th
anniversary of the Huron Coun-
ty Junior Farmer Association.

Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bolton,
who• have recently returned
from 'a trip to the west coast,
celebrated their 25th wedding
anniversary in "the form of a
family gathering, held at the
home of their daughter And son-
in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence
Eyre, in St. Marys, on Saturday
evening. The dinner table was
tastefully decorated with roses
for the event, Many gifts were
received by the couple..
On Monday evening, neigh-
bors and friends gathered at
their home in McKillop, and
spent a social evening, and pre-
sented Mr. and Mrs. Bolton with
many beautiful gifts.
Hold Reception
For Newlyweds
A reception was held in
Staffa Hall on Friday evening,
honoring Mr. and Mrs. Lorne
Fell on their recent marriage.
A large crowd attended and
danced to music provided by
Howe's orchestra. Jack Butson
read the address and the cou-
ple were presented with .a gift
of money 'on behalf of those
present by Ross Smale. Both
Mr. and Mrs. Fell made fitting
replies.
Quite a number from this
community attended the com-
mencement exercises at Mit-
chell District -High School on
Friday evening.
Eric Norris, OAC, Guelph,
spent the weekend with Mrs.
Sam Norris and Mr, and Mrs.
Bob Norris and daughters.
The family of the late Al-
bert J. Smale dedicated a bap-
tism font in his memory in
Staffs United Church on Sun-
day morning. William Swale,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Smale,
was the first child baptized. Mr.
and Mrs. Art Smale entertained
friends and 'relatives at their
home following the service.

441 Girl Guards
Begin Meetings
The first 'meeting of the Wal-
ton Girl. Guards was held at
the home of Mrs. Nelson Reid
on Saturday, Oct. 3, with nine
girls in attendance. The course
is, "The Club Girl Stands on
Guard," with the leader, Mrs.
Nelson Reid.
The election of officers was
held with: President, Betty
Roe; vice-president, Sandra Wat-
son; secretary, Karen McDon-
ald; press secretary, Carolyn
Fraser and Brenda Bewley. A
discusson on the subject, "The
Club Girl as a Canadian Citi-
zen," followed, The next meet-
ing 'will be held at the home
of Betty Roe on Friday, Oct.
9, at 4:30 p.m.
Mrs. Jean Broadfoot accom-
panied Mr. and Mrs. Albert Car-
diff, Brussels, and Mrs, Fern
Patterson, Seaforth, to Petrolia
on Sunday where they were the
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald
Cardiff.

World Wide Communion Sun-
day was observed in Duff's Unit-
ed Church last Sunday morn-
ing with Rev. Arthur Higgin-
botham in charge of the serv-
ice. Sunday School and church
services have been withdrawn
next Sunday morning owing to
anniversary services in Mon-
crieff United Church.
The group studying the book,
"God and His Purpose," will
meet next Monday evening, Oct.
12, at 8:30, in the schoolroom
of the church.
Walton Public Library will
be closed Tuesday afternoon
and evening, October 13. The
next Tuesday, Oct. 20, it will
be open as usual.
Society Plans
First Meeting
The first meeting of the Hur-
on County Historical Society
will be held at the Colborne
Township Hall, at Carlow, on
October16,.,at8 p.m•. The pub-
lic is invited to attend. ,
The guest speaker, Professor
James R. Scott, Seaforth, execu-
tive assistant to the -President
of the University. of Waterloo,
who is presently writing a book
on the history of Huron County;
will address the meeting: He
will give some valuable infor-
mation. on the life of this coun-
ty in the early 180Q's.., Several
meetings have been held by the
executive and council members
to draw up the proposed con-
stitution and by-laws, which
will be presented to the mem-
bers next month.

New Phone
Books Out
Seaforth area telephone sub-
scribers will find themselves
among new neighbors when
they look for their listings in
the new telephone directory,
which was in the mail this
week.
For the first time, Seaforth
is included in the London di-
rectory, along with such -until
now -remote centres as West
Lorne, Shedden, Nairn, Har-
rietsville, Glencoe and Aylmer.
Old neighbors -Dublin, Brussels
and Stratford -have disappear-
ed, but will be fogad in the
Stratford area book, according
to W. W. Haysom, Bell Tele-
phone manager for the area..
Mr. Haysom said a Stratford
directory will be made avail-
able to Seaforth subscribers
and a London directory to Dub-
lin and Brussels subscribers, so
they will have access to list-
ings in neighboring Bell dis-
tricts, The Stratford director-
ies will not be released until
November.
Mr, Haysom cautioned cus-
tomers to check the numbers
in the new directory to help
avoid the annoyance of wrong
numbers, and emphasized that
the book does not become ef-
fective until November 15 for
Seaforth and Hensall users.

quiz, and- the meeting closed
with the Lord's Prayer in uni-

There has been a change in
mail delivery to the Brodhagen
post office. It comes by mail
truck from Stratford each morn-
ing at 8:15, and is dispatched
in the same way at 5, o'clock
p.m. Russell Sholdice is the
Postmaster.
The teacher and piupils of
Brodhagen school took part in
the Mitchell Fall Fair parade,
dressed as sunflowers and re-
ceived third prize.
Attend Commencement
Quite a number of parents,
relatives and friends of gradu-
ates from here attended the
Mitchell and District High
School commencement on Fri-
day evening.
The Brodhagen Band, major-
ettes and flagbearers led the

Variable weather conditions
are making it difficult to do

tive for Huron County. Some
grain corn may be harvested
next week, but moist`tire level
is coming down slowly.
•Fall plowing, silo ,filling and
late planting of fall wheat on
bean ground is taking place,
and some cattle are moving in-
to the county for winter feed-
ing.

John W. Edmunds died early
Monday morning at his home,
64 St. Andrew St., Mitchell.
• A native of Seaforth, where
he was born August 21, 1898,
he was a son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. William Edmunds, the
former Elizabeth Reid.
Mr. Edmunds went to Mitchell
in 1922 and had operated the
J. Edmunds & Son Garage there
for ever 30 years. He was a
member of Knox Presbyterian
Church and had served on the
vai'fous boards of the church.
He was past first principal of
Elliot Chapter RAM 129, GRC;
a member of Tudor Ledge, AF
& AM 141; past president of
the Mitchell Lions Club, and a
member of the Mitchell Public
School Board at the time of his
death.
He served in the First World
War and was a member of the
Royal Canadian Legion, Branch
128, Mitchell,
Besides his wife, the, former
Gladys Cook, of Mitchell, to
whom he was married Sept. 20,
1927, he is survived by one son,
Robert, Mitchell; one daughter,
Mrs, Allen (Ruth Ann) Bell,
Waterloo; two brothers, Arthur,
Barrie, and Dr. Reid Edmunds,
Guelph; two sisters, Mrs. Lloyd
(Mary) Curtis, Lindsay, and Mrs.
Frank (Anna) • Kling, Seaforth,
and three grandchildren.
The body was at the Lock-
hart funer,ye l home, Mitchell, un,
til noon Wednesday, When re-
moval was made to Knox
Presbyterian- Church, Mitchell, __ea__
where Rev. Alan Ross, minister
of the church, officiated at the
funeral ..service at 2:30 p.m.
Burial was 'in Knox Presbyter-
ian cemetery, Mitchell.

Clure. The theme was Thanks-
giving Songs. The scripture was
taken from St. Luke, verses 1
to 17, and was read by David
McClure. Mrs. Cuthill had the
Bible study, and .Margaret. Mc-
Nichol ,led in prayer. An instru-
mental by ,Glenda Lietle was
followed by a sing -song, Mrs.
Dodds told a story on Thanks-
giving. The roll call was answer-
ed by 16 members and two
leaders.
