Questions
"The question, what would
you do if you went blind has
meaning for every Canadian,"
said E. F. Wheeler, District
Field Secretary, of the Cana-
dian National Institute for the
Blind. "When you consider that
2,000 people- lose their sight
every year, you . realize that
everyone must fightthis handi:
cap." Blindness strikes people
from all walks of life—labor-
ers, farmers, industrial work-
ers, professional people, execu-
tives, housewives and nurses.
Mr. Wheeler described the
experience of a teacher, Tom
Wilkins, with a Bachelor of
Science degree arid. five years'
experience in his chosen field.
When blindness struck unex-
pectedly, it meant the end of
his teaching career, but, in ad-
dition, Tom lived the life of a
hermit for a year. He refused
to step off his front porch and
he shut out his friends.
Then a neighbor referred him
to the CNIB and the young
man's isolation ended. He met
other blind people 'and, for the
first time, realized he was not
the only person handicapped by
blindness. He enrolled in a
concentrated course on the, use
of the white cane. He learned
to read and write Braille and
took lessons in handicrafts to
develop his sense of touch. He
discussed the nature of blind-
ness with -CNIB social workers
and this brought about many
constructive changes in. Tom's
outlook _ on life. His head
straightened up and the half, -
bent ' posture he had assumed
disappeared. Ike became a skil-
full blind bowler and Started

Through counselling, Tom
Wilkins decided to study. social
work and enrolled. with one of
Canada's leading universities.
"Completion of this course
will enable Tom to enter an-
other profession. Though ,blind,
he will continue to make a use-
ful contribution to his com-
munity," Mr. Wheeler said.
Tom's case could occur any-
where' in Canada and the CNIB
would mace every effort to sup-
ply a service designed to meet
his needs. •CNIB services are

DEAR DORIS—My daughter

along. I guess he loves her all
right; ,but she can't stand him
near her. I think this is what
has.caused her to have= -a ner-
vous breakdown.
The psychiatrist told her she
would never be any better if
she continued to live with him,
feeling as she did. I didn't want'
them to marry- but her father
thought so much 'of this fellow,
and still does, that he wouldn't
let her go with anyone else.
Now she has fallen in love
with an army officer and he
with her.
She can't marry him on ac-
count of our religion.
Do you think it would be wise
for me to go and have a talk
with her psychiatrist and may-
be the priest and try to have
this fellow transferred and try
to save their marriage? We are
heartbroken. °°
NERVOUS WRECK
DEAR NERVOUS—You sim-
ply can't handle human lives
like you would chess men. They
don't fall into place. First, your
husband pushed your daughter
into marriage; now you'd like
to make her stay there.
Naturally we. cringe from

a psychiatrist who knows her
well sees no out but separation,

DEAR ALWAYS -Well, I be-
lieve you. Try to remember
that mothers get .rattled; make
mistakes. They are not 'perfect,
but they try very hard.
You are lucky to have a
grandmother to talk things ov-

and work at controlling your
own temper. Things can change.
DEAR DORIS—I am 18 and
have been going steady for 11/2
years. I don't know whether I
really love him or not.
I feel that separating for a
while would make us both re-
alize our true feelings, but he
is dead against this way of solv-
ing the problem. Also we fight
a lot.
I believe that I have been in
love before; three years ago,
and I am still not entirely over
him. I keep hoping to either
make up with my Fast love, or
to meet someone like him.
