Labor Day Weekend
Promises New High in
Highway Death- ToH
The 1964 Labor Day weekend,
which this year falls an Sept.
4th to 7th, is this season's final
holiday celebrated jointly by us
and our American friends.
Each year, with almost mon-
otonous regularity, 'the Tuesday
morning following, news med-
iums recite the details of a new
high in death and injury on
the Continent's highways.
Last year, 1963, in Canada
alone, there were 73 persons
killed on the Labor Day week-
end; if we add the U.S. total
for the same period (543), we
come up with a grim total of
616 lives snuffed out in a three-
day period! Last year's total
established a' new record, as
predicted; 1962 totals of 560
deaths, were up to that point,
a record too: These records are
seemingly only established to
be toppled each succeeding
year.
Dominion Automobile Associ-
ation, who are more than in-
terested bystanders in this pa-
rade of sad statistics, through
J. P. Lewicki, Director, offer' a
few safety tips, which, if fol -

lowed, will help you to still be
around , on Sept. 8, sound of
wind and limb:
1. Remember, at all times,
your chances of death or ser-
ious injury are three times as
great as an ordinary weekend!
To balance this out you must
be three times as careful!
2. Don't hurtle along at the
top of the speed limit, just
because it's legal to do so!
Slower speeds may not elimin-
ate accidents, but it will make
them less severe when they do
happen.
3, Don't try to crowd a
week's travel into three days.
If you must travel that far, fly
or take the train—they're saf-
er and more relaxing.
4. Don't give your fellow
driver credit for even element-
ary driving common-sense. Be-
come a "defensive" driver by
treating all others as potential
accident -makers!
5. Start back home early''
The last few hours of Labor
Day shows a sharp peak in
accident frequency each year.
You can be already safe at
home when this peak material-
izes.
6. Install seat belts and wear
'em! They're the best' single
contribution to motoring safety
since four-wheel brakes!

A NOURISHING BREAKFAST—How about starting the
day off on a cheery note with a nourishing breakfast like
this: oatmeal cereal with milk and maple sugar; hot jam -
filled muffins; a side dish of crisp bacon, served with lots
of milk and hot coffee. The home economists of the Con-
sumer Section, Canada Department of Agriculture, Ottawa,
advise adding a chilled glass of vitaminized apple. juice to
complete this nutritious breakfast.

DEAR DORIS—My brother-in-
law always wants to kiss me
whenever we are alone. Now
he 'has as much as told me he
wasn't getting enough sex from
his wife, so he chose me and
I should be proud of it!
'He's quite rude to my sister,
he has an awful temper and
they very seldom see eye to
eye. They have three children.
My. sister might have to go
to the hospital and I'd be look-
ing after the children then.
I'm scared to stay alone with
him, but I can't refuse to help
my sister.
AFRAID
DEAR AFRAID — It seems
your self -loving brother-in-law
takes what he wants 'from life
by some sort -of not -too -divine
right. Do you want him to take
you?
He needs his face slapped.
He needs to be told that YOU
don't choose HIM! And in no
uncertain terms. You hurt your
sister a great deal more by
keeping the peace then by air-
ing it all, if he won't promise
to keep his hands and lips to
himself.
DEAR DORIS — Please tell
me what to do about big feet.
I am 11 years old'and have size
eight in shoes and runners!
BIG FEET
DEAR BIG FEET—Walk 61
them. Be glad nobody made
you squeeze them into shoes
too narrow or too short;„ or
bound them when you wee a
baby, as the Chinese used to.
'I once had a boy friend who
said my feet ran along the
ground a long way before I
sprouted upwards.' If you get.
teased, explain that your feet
got ahead of ,you. Keep on
wearing shoes that are big
enough,
DEAR DORIS p For the past
five years my youngest son and
his wife have come 'home for
holidays at the same time my
husband takes his. I am ex-
pected to wait on them hand
and foot besides looking after
'all the children while they galli-
vant. I get so played out I
hardly know what to do with
myself.
I asked my husband if he
figured I was getting a fair
deal but got no answer, as he
figures that they are entitled
to a good holiday. He goes off
with them, leaving me by my-
self.
•
As soon as' they leave he
starts helping me and .tries to
make up with tne,'but it doesn't
go over. I feel if a husband
forgets •his- wife when others
are around -he isn't much of a
man.
A VERY UNHAPPY PERSON
DEAR UNHAPPY — Right !
They all need straightening out
—by mother. This means you!
First, a talk with your too -care-
free hubby, ahead of time. Ask
him when did you two stop
pulling together?
Then a conference, - on ar-
rival of the pack. Jobs assign-
ed according to mutual agree-
ment. Baby sitters. And a
ticket for Mom to what ever
holiday -hop Pop has!
