They landed on top of a coal
scuttle and shushed it.
George Hess, whO owns the
store, thinks the thieves were
so frightened. by the experi-
ence they did not take time to
steal any loot from the jewel-
lery store. They left , by the
front entrance, which was lock-
ed from the inside. All they
got for their efforts was a
shower of plaster, which fell
with the trap-door.
Mrs. Roland Vanstone enter-
tained at herhone Thursday
evening in honor of Miss Mar-
lene Reid, bride -elect of Sep-
tember, when twenty friends of
the guest of honor presented
her with a kitchen shower. The
presentation address was read
by Mrs. Vanstone and ' gifts
were presented by Peggy Van -
stone and Patricia Parke. The
home decorations were in pink
and white motif. Miss Diane
Reid conducted contests.
A board meeting of the Kip -
pen East Women's Institute was
held at the home of President
Mrs. Vern Alderdice, at which
plans for a cooking school, to
be• held in the Hensall Com-
munity Centre in October, were
finalized.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Snyder,
of Ottawa, were guests of Mrs.
Cornelious Cook and her daugh-
ter, Mrs. George Chelew, at
Mrs. Cook's summer home,
"Delmar", at Grand Bend, Aug.
25 and 26.
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Waldo
and Mr. and Mrs. Orland Reich-
ert spent the weekend at Sil-
ver. Lake and Middlebury, In-
diana.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Lindsay,
Pamela, Sheila and Kevin, of
Willowdale, are holidaying with
Mr. and Mrs. John Henderson
and family.
Mr. and Mrs, Lloyd Lee, Guy,
Dale and Sandra returned to
Picton, after spending t w o
months with the latter's par-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Peters
and Bonnie.
Visitors last week with Mr.
and Mrs. George Hess were:
Mrs. Irene Little and two sons,
Leonard and iVernon,.'of Biggar,
Sask., and Howard and Bruce
Pettigrew, of Lincoln Park,
Mich. Mrs. Little is a niece of
Mrs. Hess, and. the Pettigrew
boys are nephews.
Miss Carolyn Smillie is a pa-
tient in St. Joseph's Hospital,
London.
Mr. Milton Love is a patient
in Victoria Hospital, London.
_• Mr. Garnet Allan, who has
been a patient in Victoria Hos-
pital, London, for the past two
weeks and a half, returned
home Saturday.
Nursing Home -Sold
Mr. and Mrs. Orville Jones
have sold the Queensway Nurs-
ing Home, Hensall, to Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Klungel, of Wood-
stock, who have had consider-
able . experience in hospital
work. Mrs. Klungel is a regis-
tered nursing assistant. They
get possession the first of Sep-
tember.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones, who have
operated the nursing home very
efficiently for the past seven
years, will take up residence in
Lucan the first of September.
At present there are 12 patients
in the nursing home, but most
of the time there are 16 pa -
dents.'
Mr. and Mrs. Klungel have
three, children -two of school
age.
Michael Hoy, 13, viho attend-
ed the. Red Wing hockey school
at the Olympia, Detroit, was
awarded the trophy for the
most proficient defenceman out
of a class of 70, of boys 13 and
14 years of age. He was coach-
ed by Gordie Howe, Terry Saw -
chuck and Alex Delvechio.
Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Walker,
Murray and Miss Phyllis Dou-
gall, of Toronto, were in Detroit
over the weekend.
Capt. Bill McRae and Mrs.
McRae and family, of Tulle-
homa,Venn., U.S.A., visited this
week with friends in Hensall
and Exeter.
Mr. and Mrs. Ross McBeath,
nee Donna Hayter, were honor-
ed at a reception and dance in
Zurich Community Centre Sat-
urday evening with one of the

The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Buuek,
Brodhagen, and the, groom is.
the son of Mr. and Mrs.. Austin
Burgess, Stratford.
The bride chose a gown of
satapeau over bridal taffeta.
The bodice of Brussels lace was
styled with lilypoint sleeves and'
scoop neckline and a panel of
matching lace formed the front
of the skirt. A small bow ac-
cented the waistline of the
gown. Her bouffant silk illu-
sion veil was held by a pearl
and sequin tiara, and she car-
ried a white Bible crested with
red roses and stephanotis.
Matron of honor, Mrs. James
McKay, and bridesmaids, Miss
.J.ean,.Burgess and Miss ,Joan,
Burgess, all i sisters of the
groom, were gowned alike in
cornflower blue dresses of bem-
berg organza with lace inserts.
A white chiffon over taffeta
frock ,was worn by flower girl
Patricia McKay.
Alfred Burgess was his broth-
er's best man, and ushers were
Gary Stewart and Carl Buuck,
brother of the bride.
For travelling, the bride
donned a red chiffon over taf-
feta dress with white acces-
sories and an orchid corsage.
The couple will live in Strat-
ford.
CHURCH GROUPS HEAR REPORTS
The monthly meeting of
Burns' 'Church UCW was held
at the home of Mrs. Jack Riley,.
Mrs. Jim Scott, Sr., opened the
meeting with the thought for
the day and Hymn 502, "What
a Friend We Have in Jesus,"
She had chosen the scripture
reacting from St. John, 15th
chapter 1-13, followed by pray-
er.
The offering was received.
Mrs. Ed. Bell, assisted by Mrs.
Jack Riley, read chapter five of
"The Word and the Way -Good
and Evil." Mrs. Bell read a
short poem on "Time."
The roll call was -.answered
by a verse of Scripture. Mrs.
Watt read the minutes of the
previous meeting, also thank -
you notes. Miss Jean Leiper
gave the treasurer's report, and
Mrs. Harvey Taylor reported on
the travelling bake sale.
The' supply department re-
quested a girl's parka, 8-16
years size, be mailed by Nov.
1st. It was decided to send a
copy of "Theo World Friends"
to the home of all children' in
largest 'crowds to ever attend
a reception. They were present-
ed with a purse of money with
presentation address read by
Don Johnson, Kippen, and gift
presented by Doug McAsh, of
Varna. Desjardine orchestra
provided music for the dance.
Mr. and Mrs: Harry Hoy and
Billy were in Detroit on Sun-
day for the presentations of
awards held at the Olympia,
Detroit.
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gelder-
land, of Ridgetown, visited over
the weekend with Mr. and Mrs.
Sim Roobol.
Mr. Milton Love, who has
been a patient in Victoria Hos-
pital, London, has returned
home.

icles for the bazaar must not
be sold until the bazaar is -op-
ened. It was announced that
the copper contest was won by
Mis Jean Leiper's group.
Hymn 550, "Abide With Me,"
was sung and the meeting clos-
ed with the Lord's Prayer in
unison. Lunch was served by
Mrs. Riley and 'the other mem-
bers of 'the group.
