The 38 -member choir, of the Kitchener -Waterloo area, has been actively singing for nearly eight decades and fea- tures male vocalists ranging in age from 22 to 87 years young. The Schneider Male Chorus first emerged out of a gather- ing at a local picnic for employees of the J.M. Schnei- der Meat Packing Company. "Some of the men from the Schneider Meat plant organ- ized a sing -a -long. It was a hit," said Nancy Kidd, artistic director and conductor of the Lucknow Fall Fair September 16, 17 & 18, 2016 111111111111 Our theme this year is, "Sew it, Grow it, Show it!" "People loved the first picnic performance so much that the men decided to con- tinue rehearsing and enter- taining as a group." With the encouragement and support of the company president and owner, the Cho- rus was officially founded in 1939 and began to perform throughout the community and the province, growing in both numbers and strength of performance. Since the mid - 50s, the choir has branched out, performing nationally and internationally on tours of Northern Ontario, Eastern Can- ada, the United States and Ber- muda, Great Britain, Holland, Germany, and France. Today, under Kidd's direc- tion, with Barbara Kellerman and Lori Danylchuk as accom- panists, the group not only finds joy in their shared love of music, but in fundraising and supporting local causes in their own communities. "The Sch- neider Male Chorus takes great pleasure in performing for fun- draisers that support a great cause, as well as entertaining at seniors' homes and residences;' said Kidd. "This group consists of men from a wide variety of backgrounds. We are a not-for- profit organization and we hope that we can use our gifts to raise money for those in need' The choir has participated in community fundraisers in Listowel and church fundrais- ers in Harriston, Neustadt, and Palmerston. They also entertain at seniors' homes for a small fee or for free, and per- form at the local, annual Ger- man Fair—Christkindl Mar- ket—every year at Kitchener City Hall. One notable perfor- mance, says Kidd, was at fun- draiser for a local child who had brain cancer. "The venue was packed to its limits," she says of the concert that helped raise nearly $10,000. The group's Kingsbridge per- formance will feature an array of musical pieces, chosen with care. "Choices are usually based on upcoming concerts, music that we learn and grow from, our potential audience make- up, the strength of each section, but most of all on music that I love and that I think the chorus will love to work on and per- form," she said. "Because we only rehearse once a week, we have pieces that we know fairly well that we can take out [and] we insert new pieces through- out the year as we become comfortable with them" Creating a rehearsal that has a "balance of joy, learning, musical growth and musical accomplishment" is her goal. "This takes planning—both short term and long term;" Kidd said. "The men range in age and ability. With this comes some delicate patience among each other' She added the men are "wonderful" in assisting new members with learning notes and hearing their parts. "This is a community choir. I hope that through their Schneider Male Chorus The Schneider Male Chorus, along with Artistic Director Nancy Kidd and accompanists Barbara Kellerman and Lori Danylchuk, will be performing a variety of musical pieces at the Kingsbridge Centre concert. participation at rehearsal each week that they can all grow both vocally and musically, and trust each other." The future for the Chorus "looks great" and that they con- tinue to recruit new members who bring a variety of skills and talents to the "already passion- ate" group, she said. "Experience is not required but a love to sing as a commu- nity and a desire to share the joy of music -making is helpful:' For Kidd, being director of the Schneider Male Chorus comes with great rewards. "Their love of singing and pas- sion to communicate through music is a joy," she says. "Their desire to keep this group as a vital part of our community— one they can be proud of—is awesome!" The Schneider Male Chorus concert at the Kingsbridge Centre (formerly St. Joseph's Church, Kingsbridge) will start at 3 p.m. Doors will open at 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be available.
