NWMO document
A map shows three potential geological bore hole sites the public is encouraged to comment on, with one to be selected within Huron -
Kinloss. The sites include the Kinloss Gravel Pit, the Kinloss, Landfill, and the Proposed Industrial Park east of Ripley.
NWMO open houses to whittle down three potential bore hole sites to one in Huron -Kinloss

The public is being called
upon to discuss the potential
for borehole drilling at one
of three sites in Huron -Kin-
loss, in order to test the
area's geological suitability.
The Nuclear Waste Man-
agement Organization's
(NWMO) Marie Wilson said
they're hoping for as many
comments and feedback as
they can gather on the his-
tory, significance, landscape
and suitability of the three
locations, in order for the
community to make a deci-
sion in parallel with NWMO.
The sites have been tech-
nically reviewed by NWMO
as "suitable for initial bore-
hole drilling," Wilson said,
adding only one is antici-
pated to be selected for drill-
ing to test its geology, possi-
bly in 2017 if the engagement
timeline and community
preference permit.
The two-day open house
at the Lucknow Community
Centre will run Tuesday,
Nov. 1 from 1-8 p.m. and
Wednesday Nov. 2 from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m., with maps,
details and information
regarding three potential
sites - the Kinloss Gravel Pit,
the Kinloss, Landfill, and the
Proposed Industrial Park
east of Ripley.
The federal organization
continues its investigations
into finding a suitable and
willing community to store
Canada's used nuclear fuel a
half -kilometre underground.
The borehole drilling at one
of the three Huron -Kinloss
sites will be conducted in
partnership with the local
and regional community, in
parallel with a second bore-
hole being investigated east
of the township within four
sites in the Municipality of
South Bruce.
"We're making the effort
to engage as many com-
ments as possible, hopefully
a wide range across a good
section of the population,"
said Wilson.
The open house is an
opportunity for the commu-
nity to comment on the pro-
posed borehole drilling, but
comments and information
can also be shared during
the office hours at the
Huron -Kinloss Learn More
Centre in Ripley from Wed -
Fri, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or the
South Bruce Learn More
Centre in Teeswater, Tues-
day -Thursday from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
Drill rigs will be on site for
people to see during the
open houses, with explana-
tions of what kinds of data
will be collected from the
one kilometre of rock core,
about 3.3 inches in diametre,
that they hope to extract
from the site that is selected.
The information they
learn from the core sample
will further the research into
what is already known from
oil and gas geological drill-
ing, as well as drilling at the
Bruce nuclear site for OPG's
separate low and
intermediate nuclear waste
proposal, and other existing
information.
"We need to make sure the
community is clear on what
it means, and what it doesn't
mean," she said, adding the
initial borehole, "is for
research purposes only."
