The Oct. 29 Legion fund- raiser takes place every year, and Canadians across the country wear a lapel poppy as a symbol of national pride and respect. The visual pledge symbol- izes a commitment to never forget the sacrifices made for our freedom. Although the poppies are distributed freely, the Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund, an account that is held in trust. Use of poppy funds is strictly regulated by the Legion. The funds are used to directly support Canada's serving and retired Veterans and their families, while pro- moting remembrance to all Canadians. At Branch 309, poppy funds are used for the fol- lowing: Annual Veterans' and Widows' dinner, Youth Remembrance Poster, Poem and Essay contests, Bursa- ries for postsecondary stu- dents, Goodie bags for Veter- ans at Parkwood Hospital in London, Sponsoring a Vet- eran at Parkwood Hospital, and Contributions to the Ontario Command Branches and Ladies' Auxiliaries Char- itable Foundation.
