Goderich Mine wins
gold, silver at int'I mine
rescue competition
The Goderich Mine Res-
cue Team earned gold and
silver medals at the 10th
International Mines Rescue
Competition, hosted by
Workplace Safety North and
Ontario Mine Rescue in Sud-
bury Aug. 19 to 26.
The Compass Minerals
team competed against 26
teams representing 13
nations in mining emergency
response simulations
including an underground
scenario, firefighting, first aid,
high -angle rope rescue as
well as theoretical and practi-
cal knowledge testing. The
Goderich team earned gold
in written theory and silver in
underground rescue.
"Our rescue team has
made us very proud," said
Gerry Rogers, vice president
of operations at Goderich
Mine. "The gold and silver
awards are world's best and
is a great reward for the long
hours of training."
The competition allows
mines to evaluate and com-
pare the effectiveness and
quality of their mine rescue
training programs. Teams
participate in the spirit of
competition and collabora-
tion to understand how other
teams work, while testing
their own mine rescue skills.

Electoral Reform Dialogue taking place Oct. 6 at Huron County Museum
Local citizens have organ-
ized an Electoral Reform
Dialogue Oct. 6, as part of
the public consultation by
the all -party Canadian Par-
liamentary committee on
electoral reform.
The committee will be
making it's recommenda-
tions by Dec. 1, 2016 and the
public is invited to attend at
the Huron County Museum
on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 pm
to learn about the work of
the committee and ways the
electoral process could be
improved.
"I believe democracy
works best when every vote
counts toward
representation in every elec-
tion," said organizer Dean
Whalen. "This is an impor-
tant opportunity for Canadi-
ans to develop an electoral
process that works for all of
us each election."
Over 60% of the votes cast
in the 2015 Canadian elec-
tion went to parties that had
made electoral reform part
of their election platform.
Canadians have become
increasingly frustrated
with the current "First
Past the Post" or "Winner
take All" system which
often produces phony
majority governments
where a party that gets
less than 40% of the popu-
lar vote gets more than
50% of the seats and 100%
of the power in Parlia-
ment. It also means that
more than half the voters
in each election don't
elect anyone and their
ballot counts toward no
representation for them in
Parliament.
The electoral reform com-
mittee is looking at different
models for electoral reform
that would improve Effec-
tiveness and legitimacy,
Voter engagement, Accessi-
bility and inclusiveness,
Integrity, and Local
representation.

was very important for the
government to hear views on
electoral reform from people
who live in a rural commu-
nity," said Allan Thompson,
communications chair for
the Huron -Bruce federal

"We also want to make sure
that all of the options are put
on the table for discussion,
rather than making the case
for one option or the other,"

Prof. Stephenson will
make a brief presentation
about various electoral
reform options and in a
nonpartisan fashion, will
attempt to explain some of
the perceived benefits and
drawbacks of each option.
Then the audience will be
divided up into small
groups for a discussion of a
number of questions
touching on electoral
reform.
For example, the groups
could be asked to discuss:
• What do you think about
the current system for elect-
ing Members of Parliament
(benefits/flaws)? Do you
feel that votes are fairly
translated?
• Do you have a preferred
alternative to the current
system? What specific fea-
tures are
important to you in an
electoral system (for exam-
ple local representation,
proportionality,
simplicity, legitimacy
etc.)?
• Why do you think many
Canadians choose not to
engage in the democratic
process? How would you
encourage participation?
• Do you feel that it should
it be mandatory to cast a
ballot?
• Should Canadians be
able to vote online? Or
would you prefer to main-
tain current voting
practices?
There will be people at
each table to take notes and
then a brief summary of the
key points from each table
will be shared with the
whole audience. A detailed
report based on the issues
raised
during the discussions will
be compiled by the organiz-
ers and submitted to the
Government of
Canada.
