The Lucknow Sentinel, 2016-11-23, Page 1616 Lucknow Sentinel • Wednesday, November 23, 2016 ); The NWMO and Huron -Kinloss Learning Together NOVEMBER 2016 Residents Provide Local Knowledge About Proposed Borehole Locations in Huron -Kinloss An open house held in Lucknow on November 1 and 2 provided an opportunity for Huron -Kinloss and area residents to help guide the next phase of work in preliminary assessment studies — initial borehole drilling. The initial borehole would be for research purposes only and is not expected to be a repository site. It would advance under- standing of the general geology across the community, and help assess the area's potential suitability to safely host a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. Citizens in attendance at the open house had an opportunity to view three proposed borehole locations on a map (the Kinloss Gravel Pit, Kinloss Landfill site, and a proposed industrial park in Ripley). Many shared local knowledge about the proposed areas, located on municipally - owned land. Citizens were also interested in discussing how best to conduct the drilling and preservation of core with respect to timing of drilling, number of shifts during a 24-hour period, and other potential considerations. These valuable comments will help the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and the community work together to identify the preferred location for one research borehole, and develop a drilling work plan that reflects community preferences. The NWMO plans to continue talking with community members about the proposed borehole locations throughout the remainder of 2016 and into early 2017. It's important for the community to know this research borehole will be on municipal land and is not expected to be a repository site. Initial borehole studies are planned for a number of areas in northern and southern Ontario, and are expected to take a number of years to complete. Selecting and ultimately confirming a safe site for the repository in any area will take several years of progressively more detailed technical and social studies, as well as engagement with the interested community, First Nations and Metis communities in the area, and surrounding communities. For additional information or to comment about borehole drilling, please email contactus@nwmo.ca, visit the Learn More Centre in Ripley or call 519.386.6711. Murray Irvin discusses the potential locations for one initial borehole with the NWMO's geoscientist Maria Sanchez -Rico at an open house held in Lucknow on November 1 and 2. A second open house at the Learn More Centre in Ripley will be held on December 7, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., as part of ongoing opportuni- ties for the community to provide comment about the proposed borehole locations. The community and the NWMO are currently planning for the drilling of one research borehole to advance the understanding of general geology across the area. Your comments on the three proposed borehole locations are valuable and will help the community and the NWMO plan our work together. Drop by the open house to meet NWMO staff, learn about the project and share your thoughts on this next phase of work. For more information, call 519.386.6711. The December 7 open house will also provide residents with an opportunity to view the newly renovated Learn More Centre. Come in and view the new surroundings, which have been designed to encourage people to stay, have a coffee and chat in a relaxed environment. nwmo NUCLEAR WASTE SOCIETE DE GESTION MANAGEMENT DES DECHETS ORGANIZATION NUCLEAIRES The NWMO and Huron -Kinloss Learning Together is a community -oriented mini -newsletter designed to encourage learning and discussion about Canada's plan for the long-term management of used nuclear fuel and the site selection process.
