Michael Barrett said the project, which will take two years to complete, will lead to the creation of more jobs in Teeswater and also secures the long-term future of employment at the plant. "I'm absolutely thrilled," he said in an interview on Nov. 16, 2016. "Number 1 because we're leading in the dairy indus- try. Number 2 because our farmer board and our farmer members are ready to make this investment in the sustainable dairy indus- try. But also, we have a lot of plants in a lot of small com- munities and I know what this means to the life and the livelihood of the communities. "This is one of the best days of my life as CEO of Gay Lea Foods because this is the right investment, in the right time at the right place for the right people." Barrett noted that the Canadian owned and oper- ated dairy co-operative's Teeswater location is an inter -generational plant at which many current employees' parents and grandparents also worked. "And of course there's always angst as to what happens to an employer, LUCKNOW ARENA SCHEDULE NOVEMBER 23,0 - NOVEMBER 29TH Wednesday, November 23 10:OOam Adults & Tots Skating - $2/ Skater 11:OOam Skate & Shoot - $2/Skater 5:OOpm Initiation/Tyke Practice 6:OOpm PeeWee Rep Practice 7:OOpm Bantam LL Game vs Minto 8:30pm Legends Practice 9:30pm Rec Hockey - Lagers vs Lanes Thursday, November 24 10:00am Adults & Tots Skating - $2/Skater 11:OOam Skate & Shoot - $2/Skater 5:00pm Novice/Atom Practice 6:00pm Bantam Rep Practice 7:00pm Family Skate - Sponsored by Lucknow United Church 8:00pm Rec Hockey - Roosters vs Kintail 9:30pm Rec Hockey -Ambedey vs Holyrood Friday, November 25 10:OOam Adults & Tots Skating - $2/Skater 11:OOam Skate & Shoot - $2/Skater 5:OOpm Bantam LL Practice 6:OOpm ICE AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL 7:OOpm Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade Public Skating 9:OOpm Midget LL Game vs Wingham Saturday, November 26 8:10am 9:30am 10:30am 11:30am 12:30pm 1:30pm 2:30pm 4:OOpm 5:30pm 7:00pm 7:30pm Learn to Skate Novice LL Game vs Central Perth Tyke Game vs South Bruce ICE AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL Atom LL Game vs Kincardine Public Skating - Sponsored by Lucknow Lancers PeeWee LL Game vs Zurich Intermediate Ladies Practice Legends Game vs Woolwich Lancers Game Warmup Lancers Game vs Saugeen Shores SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27 9:30am 10:30am 12:OOpm 1:30pm 3:OOpm 4:30pm 6:OOpm ICE AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL Port Albert vs Clinton Public Skating - Sponsored by Lucknow Juvenile Silver Stick Committee Intermediate Ladies Game vs Saugeen Shores Juvenile Game vs Listowel PeeWee Girls Rep Practice ICE AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28 10:OOam 11:OOam 5:OOpm 6:O0pm 7:OOpm 8:30pm Adults & Tots Skating - $2/Skater Skate & Shoot - $2/Skater Novice Rep Practice PeeWee LL Practice Bantam Rep Game vs Mitchell Midget Rep Practice TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29 10:OOam 11:OOam 5:OOpm 6:OOpm 7:OOpm 8:30pm Adults &Tots Skating - $2/Skater Skate & Shoot - $2/Skater Novice LL Practice Atom LL Practice Midget Girls Rep Practice Lancers Practice HURON TELECOMMUNICATIONS CO-OPERATIVE LTD. 519-395-3800 www.hurontel.on.ca especially when you've got almost a single -employer town there are always wor- ries. And there are a lot of happy faces around here today because of the invest- ments being made," he said. The project will involve the installation of a new, state-of-the-art milk dryer. The co-operative has already begun ordering equipment for the upgrade, with actual construction expected to begin in the spring, Barrett said. Most of the work will be done within the existing footprint of the Teeswater plant. "It's kind of like renovating the old farmhouse. The out- side looks the same but the inside is going to be all shiny, new and modern," he said. "We will be putting a new dryer into this facility and once that's done we'll be tak- ing out the old dryer so there won't be an interruption to the milk flow, to employ- ment or to the economic via- bility of this plant over the next 24 months:' The work will nearly dou- ble the capacity of the plant, he said. Barrett said it's too early to say how many jobs will be created once the upgrade is complete. But he said dou- bling the capacity doesn't mean doubling the number of employees, which cur- rently sits at 85. South Bruce Mayor Bob Buckle said he is quite pleased that Gay Lea Foods will be expanding its opera- tion in Teeswater. "It not only will create jobs but it will protect the 80 or so jobs that are already here and that's really important," he said. South Bruce council, he said, has been working closely with the co-operative for several years as it works on an expansion plan. Since the Gay Lea plant is in a flood plain, regulations limit the expansion of the facility. However, a project to update flood plan mapping in Teeswater is happening now, according to the Sau- geen Valley Conservation Authority. General manager Wayne Brohman said the project is a priority. Barrett said since most of the work will be within the plant's existing footprint, the co-operative does not fore- see any issues with the pro- ject going ahead. The Teeswater project is the first phase of Gay Lea Foods' plan to invest $140 million over four years to "establish an innovative nutrition and nutraceutical - grade dairy ingredients hub in Canada." Phase 1 also includes spending $3 million to build a research and development "Centre of Excellence" in Hamilton. The co-operative's Toronto -area food manufac- turing facilities will also be upgraded and expanded as part of Phase 1. Barrett noted that the dairy industry is becoming more and more sophisticated.
