Star Column: Dippers everywhere in the sky!

Dippers can be found in sev-
eral places in the starry sky but,
to me, they resemble sauce
pans more than dippers (does
anyone still use a dipper to
scoop water from a bucket?).
There are the most famous
two, the Big and Little Dip-
pers (Large and Small
Saucepan?), but I have come
across references to at least
four altogether.
One of them is the Pleia-
des that I will describe in
detail below, the other is a
"Milk Dipper,' -the handle of
the Teapot in Sagittarius and
not commonly mentioned.
Beginners often confuse the
true Little Dipper, Ursa Minor
with the Pleiades, but it is
much larger. Unlike the Pleia-
des, however, Ursa Minor has
only one famous star, Polaris,
the North Star, the only star
that does not appear to move
in our sky because it is lined
up along the Earth's rotation
axis Get an amateur astrono-
mer with a laser pointer to
trace out Ursa Minor for you,
-it is difficult if the sky is not
really dark. Polaris is easy if
you line up the two stars of the
bowl of the Big Saucepan and
go up about five times the dis-
tance between them. Polaris is
a star of only average bright-
ness (49th in the list) located
at the end of the little sauce-
pan's handle, and the rest of
the Little Dipper is pretty
obscure until your star guide
points it out.
The Pleiades are not offi-
cially a dipper at all (not even a
pot) but the cluster does
resemble a tiny one with a sin-
gle star in its handle. The clus-
ter is small (440 light years
away) and seeing all seven
stars with the naked has always
been a bit of a challenge. Five
jump out almost immediately
(the pot) and one or two more
can be added with a bit of care-
ful looking and the star map
provided here.
Though "Seven" is in the
name for the Pleiades (Seven
Sisters), there are actually nine
named stars. Mom and dad,
Pleione and Atlas, are also
there, -look in the handle of the
tiny dipper.The seven offspring
are distributed among the rest
of the bright cluster stars.
These wintery nights, the
Pleiades are out of the murky
air near the horizon by 9 pm
or so. The naked eye view is
nice, but even nicer is the
view through binoculars, my
favourite optical aid for this
particular cluster. Don't be
upset that dad and daughters
are the brightest stars in the
cluster and that Pleione, the
mother that bore 25 children,
is "just" a faint star next to
Atlas (where else?). It is just
not fair, because without her,
this gorgeous sight would not
be present in our sky. Thank
you, Pleione! You and your
girls are at the top of my
observing list. (OK, Dad too.)
