Various members work on the Wawanosh 4-H Community Garden.
Wawanosh 4-H has
many activities this spring
Meeting Three of the
Wawanosh 4-H horticultural
club took place on May 7,
2016 at the Wingham Com-
munity Garden.
President Maisy led the
club in Roll Call which was
"What is something that you
have built or helped to
build?" After Roll Call mem-
bers were given a choice of
the Working Groups that
they wanted to start with.
Phil Beard, from the Com-
munity Garden Committee,
had organized the supplies/
materials needed for the
activities. A 4-H Leader
acted as the leader of each
Working Group.
One group began raking
the topsoil. They were to
spread the soil evenly in the
four raised beds that were
already built. Another group
constructed a wooden fence
for a compost area and then
worked on completing the
ends in the four raised beds
by using wooden boards, a
drill and wood screws. The
other work group measured,
cut and then laid down land-
scape fabric for the walkways
between the wooden beds.
They also used a wheelbar-
row and shovels to apply
mulch on top of the land-
scape fabric.
After about an hour, the
Club took a short snack
break and then returned to
the working groups. Mem-
bers had an opportunity to
switch working groups at
this time. After about
another 30 minutes of work,
Maisy closed the meeting
with the motto.
The Wawanosh Llfe Skills
Club had obtained funds
through the Prosperity Fund
Youth Grant from the Libro
Credit Union for the building
of the raised beds for the
Wingham Community
Garden.
Meeting Four of the
Wawanosh 4-H horticultural
club took place on May 10,
2016 at the Wingham Com-
munity Garden. As members
arrived they were quick to
start working in the garden.
Once all members had
arrived Maisy led Roll Call
which was "Name a vegeta-
ble you have grown, or want
to grow, and how it turned
out" Answered varied from
corn to potatoes to beans.
Members then split up
into Working Groups. Some
took on the challenge of lev-
elling the mounds of soil in
the four larger beds while
some planted strawberries in
one of the narrower raised
beds. Others put up trellises
for peas and then planted
three different varieties of
peas.
After the planting was
completed, members
headed to Leader Eileen's
house. Once there, the Club
read and discussed the com-
mon bond between various
vegetables. Ideas for a club
name were put forth and the
Club decided on "Garden'
Gang" as it name. Abby R. is
to create a Title Page for the
Club with that name. The
Leaders reminded members
to work on their individual
Club projects as they will
expect an update how the
projects are coming along.
The club then read about
when to plant various vegeta-
bles and if they were going to
grow their own seedlings when
they should be planted. Many
vegetables are best planted out-
doors two weeks after the last
frost date. Next, Mary Ellen led
the club in an interactive activ-
ity on how to properly plant
your garden. Now knowing
how to plant a proper garden,
the members filled out "Tips for
a Better Garden." The meeting
was closed with the motto and
the club enjoyed a snack of can-
taloupe and juice provided by
Eileen.
The next meeting is May 31
at 7 p.m. at the Wingham
Community Garden.
