Motion-Huron Minds in
Motion program.
On April 22, MPP for
Huron -Bruce, Lisa Thomp-
son presented the Trillium
Foundation with a certificate
of recognition for its contri-
bution to the Minds in
Motion program, as it has
committed $385,400 over the
next three years to help sup-
port it.
The Alzheimer Society of
Huron County already runs
the program at the Goderich
YMCA, the Grand Bend
Community Centre, the
North Huron Community
Centre and at ONE CARE in
Clinton. The funds are a
"grow grant", which means
the program will be starting
in Exeter as well.
Thompson said the Tril-
lium Foundation is leading
by being an example that
other organizations in
Ontario could follow.
This type of programming
is so important, and the
knowledge gained from the
families participating is
appreciated, Thompson said.
The program is designed
to be a collaborative
approach to physical fitness
and brain stimulation for
those living with dementia
and their care partners. In
takes place once a week for
eight weeks. The first hour
involves a fitness session,
and the second hour is dedi-
cated to therapeutic recrea-
tion, like art and games.
There are 12 other Alzhei-
mer societies offering the
program in communities
across the province, as well
as province -wide in British
Columbia, said Jeanette
Sears, public education
coordinator with the Alzhei-
mer Society of Huron
County.
There have been some
promising results from par-
ticipants of the Minds in
Motion program. Endurance
improved by 20 per cent and
strength improved by 15 per
cent, Sears said.
Minds in Motion in Huron
County has had 91 partici-
pants, nine volunteers and
four fitness instructors over
the 14 month pilot project.
