With the cost of post -sec-
ondary school rising, stu-
dents may find it increasingly
difficult to find a way to fund
their education.
Sixyears ago the Goderich-
Huron YMCA created the
Celebration of Youth Awards
to help young people who
were making a difference in
their community.
The Goderich-Huron
YMCA held its awards cere-
mony on April 30 at the Bay-
field Town Hall.
Each of the nine student
recipients was awarded
$1,000 to put towards further
education.
Alyssa Bourassa, a Goder-
ich native, received the Social
Good Award for her work
with promoting wellness,
healthy living and public rec-
reation. Bourassa is a Grade
12 student at GDCI and was
chosen as a school board and
YMCA representative in
Webequie. She was a mem-
ber of a wellness group called
EatFit, which went to the First
Nation community in north-
ern Ontario to help set an
example of wellness.
Hillary Schramm has
hopes of returning to Huron
County as a large animal vet-
erinarian after her post -sec-
ondary education. She said
one accomplishment she is
most proud of is her work
with the Seaforth and District
All Girls Marching Band. She
worked to increase the num-
ber of members by helping
her band director create an
after-school music program
that was meant to attract
more members.
Schramm grew up on a
dairy farm in Auburn and has
been actively involved in the
4-H program. She was the
recipient of the Volunteerism
& Community Service Award.
The second Volunteerism
& Community Service Award
was given to Haley Ferguson
from Goderich. Ferguson is a
Grade 12 student at GDCI
who has been volunteering
for the fireman's breakfast,
the Children's Festival, the
Celtic Festival, a soccer camp
and as a coach for a local
ringette team.
The recipient of the Health
& Wellness Award was Con-
nor Cox, a Grade 12 student
at GDCI.
Cox was given this award
because of his participation
in high school athletics as
well as his volunteer work
coaching for the Thunder
basketball program, all while
maintaining a 94 per cent
average.
Sarah Alton of Lucknow
received the second Health &
Wellness Award for her dedi-
cation to swimming and
rugby. She has coached
young people locally and
internationally as a way to
encourage confidence
building.
Goderich resident, Aryn
Buchanan, was given the Per-
sonal Achievement Award by
the Celebration of Youth
committee.
Buchanan was the recipi-
ent of the award because of
her tireless spirit and her
ability to overcome obstacles
to achieve success in aca-
demics, athletics and volun-
teer positions.
Buchanan said she hopes
to attend the Child and Youth
Care course at college.
Kayla Datema of Clinton
was the second recipient of
the Personal Achievement
Award. She has overcome a
medical condition that had
her miss a significant portion
of her Grade 11 year.
Datema has not let her
medical condition stop her
from helping others. She has
volunteered many hours at
Huronview retirement home
and at PlucknFest in Clinton.
At Central Huron Secondary
School Datema was actively
involved in student council,
the Reach for the Top team,
Change Day and CHSS's Gen-
der Sexuality Alliance.
One Philanthropy Award
winner was Brooke Malley, a
Grade 12 student from
Goderich who has spear-
headed a number of cam-
paigns for charities and non-
profits. She has been the
leader of a Relay for Life team
that has raised over $2,000;
she started a "Be the Change"
club at GDCI; and she helps
run the Spirit of Canada cof-
fee houses.
The second Philanthropy
Award winner was Sean
Mitchell from Walton. Mitch-
ell helped lead his local Leo
Club through a fundraising
campaign to renovate an old
tennis court. The club raised
over $12,000.
Mitchell is also actively
involved in local politics, hav-
ing volunteered with a fed-
eral political campaign as a
youth ambassador and as a
member of the youth engage-
ment committee.
In additional to politics,
Mitchell is a member of the
Blyth Festival Orchestra and
school bands.
One of the Personal Achievement
Awards was presented to Aryn
Buchanan. It was sponsored
by Huron Women's Shelter and
presented by Carol Rowan.
Sponsor Barb Major-McEwan presented
Kayla Datema with the second Personal
Achievement Award.
