and local talent

As spotlights dimmed, talents
shone brightly at the Kingsbridge
Centre on Good Friday as perform-
ers of all ages took to the stage to
recreate the Easter story and cele-
brate the season of renewal.
The ecumenical celebration
'Journey To Easter: Because He
Lives' was hosted by Kingsbridge
on 21 and St. Joseph's Kingsbridge
Community (SJKC). The event fea-
tured local musicians, vocalists,
artists, dancers, and actors and
drew a crowd of nearly 200 people,
including community members
and out-of-town visitors.
The celebration began with a
welcoming and spirited perfor-
mance by the Kingsbridge Choir, as
attendees were seated in the his-
toric, century -old church amidst
dusk -kissed stained glass and deli-
cate Easter decor. Shawn Van Osch,
the evening's master of ceremo-
nies, then encouraged guests to
share in the wondrous journey of
Easter with the community.
"We, members of St. Joseph's
Kingsbridge Community, are
happy to share our Easter tradition
with you," invited Van Osch.
"Tonight we will be taking you on
the journey of Holy Week begin-
ning with Palm Sunday and mov-
ing to Holy Thursday, Good Friday,
Holy Saturday and Easter
morning."
The introduction was followed
by an elegant performance by the
Kingsbridge Quartet, accompanied
by violinist Bridget Hayden.
The Journey to Easter story,
depicted by young volunteer mem-
bers of the Kingsbridge Commu-
nity, commenced with a dramatic
interpretation of Palm Sunday as
palms were laid at centre stage.
Next, Holy Thursday was honoured
as a simulated washing of feet was
re-enacted. Good Friday was repre-
sented through the traditional
reading of the Stations of the Cross,
while actors depicted each station
in a dramatic tableau. Choir mem-
bers provided accompanying vocal
solos and an inspired interpretive
dance was performed by Maddie
Van Osch.
Guests then viewed a thought-
provoking—and emotion-evok-
ing—video montage, A Modern
Easter Story, which related the tra-
ditional Easter story to the mod-
ern-day experience of human
struggle, sacrifice, and strength.
The video presentation was
accompanied by a solo Easter ren-
dition of the classic Leonard
Cohen ballad "Hallelujah," sung
by Kingsbridge Choir director,
Marianne Hogan.
The dramatic tableau then fin-
ished with the depiction of Holy
Saturday and the stage was cleared
for the final celebration of Easter
Sunday. When the lights came up
and the crowd was treated to an
uplifting conclusion to the Easter
Story—a surprise "flash dance"
performance led by young, local
dancers Olivia Hess and Olivia
Weaver. The choir closed the event
as guests were invited to stay to
visit and mingle, many of whom
were left with a lasting impression
of the Kingsbridge Centre's first
Easter celebration.
"I was impressed by the level of
professionalism and spirituality
that was worked into the program,
and the talent involved by all the
participants," said Denise Dalton.
Dalton, who has roots in the Kings-
bridge area travelled from London
for the celebration. "It was just a
wonderful evening and well worth
attending."
